The Umbrella corporation believed that once their Racoon City cover-up had been let out, they'd leave the place scot-free. They were wrong. Upon Racoon City's destruction, a man, whose codename was Grimm, was flown in to investigate the rubble. He was abducted shortly thereafter by Umbrella specialists. They experimented on him, something they called Project Crimson Tears. The project was meant to find a cure for the G-virus, but it never fell through (Wesker never approved of the experiment in the first place). Umbrella immediately left the crew and its subjects for dead, and the t-virus slowly but surely wiped them out, from the inside out... save for one, who was left wasted of his former self.

The experiment, as he was the only succesful subject of Umbrella's atrocity, made him so much stronger and faster than he first was. He had keener eyesight, and his senses practically tripled from their old average and substantial abilities. No sane Umbrella employee has ever crossed his path, so to make up for it, he crosses theirs, rather destructively.

This is the story of an experiment gone arway, of one man on a mission to gain back his humanity.

PROLOGUE: NO SECOND CHANCES

Sometimes, it's just hard to catch a break, y'know? One minute, you're sitting at a bar, drinking happily with a few good friends, and thinking about that one girl eyeing you from across it. Maybe it's a bit too much to ask, but hey, in my line of work, you take all the chances you can get. If I had a dime for every time some idiot tried to fight me in a bar-brawl, I'd be rich as hell. No, seriously. I'll wager all I got that i can beat whoever the hell it is who wants me to fight them.

It was the same case tonight. I'm buzzed. He wasn't (it's a bar for christ's sake, not a church). The guy, with blonde hair and brown eyes, looked alot like me. A bit odd, I hadn't seen anyone like that since... no, nevermind. He walked up to me, all nonchalant, and began it... all of that fateful night's events. "I hear tell you're pretty damn good at what you do... Grimm."

I showed no  sign of emotion. No one had called me that in, what, seven years? Ten? God only knows, nbut I knew sure as hell this guy had some baggage against me.

"What's it to you?" I debated whether or not to knock this guy out right then and there. I decided against it.

He had a hand in his pocket, perhaps about to pull something out. I looked at him, finally, then recognized so many features. The scar across his left eye, the way his eyes had no reflection of what he saw... in fact, his eyes were dark. Pitch-black, as he had no irises. "Shit," I mumbled under my breathe.

"Yeah..." He said, chuckling at what he saw as an unending amount of irony. "Shit."

"So... what do you want?" I asked him, a question that was longing to be asked once I saw his face. Before he could answer, I put my earplugs back in my ears, with Hollywood Undead playing ("I cannot stand who i am/ im this man/ with this blood on my hands/ in this blood i am damned").

He pulled the earplugs out ("So watch my wings burn/ as they burn in the fire/ and scatter the ashes/ no need for the choir") rather furiously. "Don't - you - fucking - dare." He whispered into my ear, making sure every word came out dangerously. I nodded towards the bartender, a man I'd known for years. He knew that chances were this guy was not good news for the bar's publicity. So he closed the shop, and brought us both out back. I pulled a gun I hadn't used, much less seen, in years. He pulled his. So we just stood there, pacing around each other, not knowing who was gonna make the first move. Then a line from the song I was just listening to came back to me, although at the time I had no idea why. Looking back on it, I'm surprised I didn't.I decided it was going to be the perfect test. Only a set few knew the meaning of the words, and even fewer could recite it in just the right way and tone.

"So let this gun bond us..." I said, waiting on baited breathe to hear his reply. "Let's hide by this lust..." He quickly countered.

I was devestated, but in awe at the same time. "And once we are just dust..." I continued, and did not stop. This time he joined in. "He'll know that he loved us."

We both slacked our arms, but I was still tensed. This was a man I hadn't seen in years, a man who was supposed to be dead. "How do you know my name?" I questioned, "And, under much different circumstances, how the hell do you know where I was?"

He chuckled, knowing my pain. "Grimm... it's been damned too long. You're saying you don't remember me?" "Oh, I remember you all right..." "Good. That just makes my job... easier."

We both walked towards the center of the dark alley, one of those really nasty ones you always see in movies where the good guy gets jumped by the gangsters. I stared at him, and he stared right back. No way in hell was I gonna let this guy stare me down, especially since this guy was (I can't believe I'm going to say this) an old friend.

Then we shook hands, and hugged (No, I can guarentee he was not a stranger). His body was still thin as hell, but his eyes went back to what they once were: twinkling with the life of a man beyond his years.

"Goddamnit, Alex. For a minute there I thought you were someone else." I said, my voice full of relief. "Of course... without me, the Double D Brothers wouldn't exist!" Alex replied.

Okay, for those of you who don't know my family, Alex "Reaper" is my brother. Way back when we were both working at TriCell, we were called the Double D Brothers, or the Double Dealing Brothers (My codename was Grimm, his was Reaper... get it?). Then I fell back. "You're different. Wha the hell did they do to you?" "Oh, well, same old same old..." He replied, staring at the ground.

Of course, snow began to fall right then. I grimaced. There was nothing right in my life, in neither of our lives. Too many things have gone worng, very few of our friends have survived in their missions, let alone the ones they traveled with us on. For some reason, we have a knack for getting into trouble, especially when we're not looking for it.

"Why are you here?" I asked him. He looked straight at me, and grinned. "I have an offer to for you... we're both going to do something very big for what they've done. Very big."

I sighed, knowing that I might not like the answers once I started asking the questions. He satred at me once agan, with his eyes twinkling. Then they went dark ,the way they were when I saw him at the bar. "One samll wrinkle in the plan though..."

He continued, looking at me like I were the ruby on a crown (or maybe his prize Andromeda Strain novel form Michael Crichton) "Once you get in, oyu can't get out." "In short?" I requested.

"There are no redoes, no do-overs... no second chances."

It's damn hard to catch a break.

(And so concludes the Prologue for this story. Chapter one is coming soon.)

Chapter 1: SHADOWS

Two days and an exploding jeep later, Alex and I had started our drive towards a little town called Gale, a place where a rumored ex-Umbrella scientist was said to be recreating the Crimson Tears project.

"So, Alex, you never did explain to me... why is this guy trying to cure the G-virus, of all things?" I asked my old friend.

"Well, Wesker never wanted a cure in the first place. During their experiments the leader of Umbrella's Racoon facilities, who took the place of Wesker when he fled, wanted to undo the damage they'd caused to Racoon City. Thus, the project which changed you began. When Wesker finally discovered what Dr. Newman was doing, he ordered the crew be... contained. Severeal weeks later, you woke up from the chamber and started out on your hunt of the scientists. Thankfully, we know the whereabouts of Newman's assistant, a Dr. Nathan Grud. Dr. Nathan is our target." Alex told me.

"Ok... but that still doesn't answer why Dr. Newman expeimented on my team."

"He wanted to make a point to Wesker. When you're six-man group entered their Zero Colony facility they had already been mostly wiped out, save for Newman and two other scientists, not including our friend in Gale. They inevitably captured you before Wesker finally gave up his milatary offense, but not before he unleashed the t-virus inside the building. Shortly afterward, you woke up."

"How do you know all this?"

"It's my job. After you went missing, I hired myself out as a bounty hunter. I got hired by many people: The BSAA, WilPharma, and even Tri-Cell. Eventually a guy named Leon asked me to follow a trail of gristly murders. Every victim was linked to theZero Colony in some way. From their surviving family members, certain BSAA agents, and a deceased millionaire, I learned of both recent and past events."

"So, our goal is..."

"Right now? Find this Nathan guy, interrogate him, and terminate him... depending on what my higher-ups think."

"Okay... Wait a second, who are me and/or you working for?"

Alex just stared at the bumpy road, the dirt flying out behind us as we drove ever-nearer towards our destination.

"I'm not able to tell you..." He finally said as a vulture flew too close for comfort.

"And why is that?" I asked in my always-hilarious monotone.

"If I told you, you'd beat me as close to death as you could, turn around, and leave."

"What makes you think I won't do that now?"

"Mike, - Or, is it still Grim? - I know you. If there's anything I know about you that hasn't changed, it's your curiosity, otherwise you would've kill me and skipped the Section 8 mantra at the bar."

I grimaced. This guy knew me better then I thought he did. I'd forgotten how smart he was since I last saw the man, so I'm surprised I got this far. At long last, I saw a sign right on the side of the road as we drifted smoothly past it.

"Welcome to Gale, the one and only! Population: 174"

Small town, I thought as we entered the city I would come to love and loathe. Let's hope it really is 'One and only'.

Now I can take the time to say something... Gale is not what I thought it was. When I first heard about the place form Alex, I pictured a wild-west place. God, I was wrong. It was bustling for a place with a population of roughly 170. It looked pretty retro, with seven skyscrapers competing for the tallest-building award. Several loges shined through here and there, but only two really stood out. One was the ever-present logo of Umbrella in its abandoned glory ("Are you kidding me?") whereas the other was an apparent BSAA recruiting facility. How's that for irony?

Now, I may not no much about Nathan, but I know enough about Umbrella to know that wherever he was at it had to be rugged, solid at its base, but also hollow in its dark demeanor. So naturally we found the nearest library and started our search. Given three hours, we finally found a house which could belong to Nathan. From inside came howls of pain and weird cutting sounds, nut like chainsaw cutting through wood sounds, more like dogs scratchhing ferociously at a door when their owner leaves.

From the outside, the palid white shown against the beige window shutters created a blend of creepiness and pure insanity as we reached for the door handle. We entered, leading no one. Still, Hell followed.
