R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 4
The night had been rough. Shane was tired and still sore but was recovering thanks to his new gift and Sherry’s love. Her constant attention made him happy knowing that someone loved him.
Today the movers were coming, which allowed Shane and Steve a chance to go back up the river to the town and grab a few things. While there they would also be spying on the BSAA outpost to gather what they could from it. Sherry wasn’t happy about this but had to let them go since she had to make sure things were packed up quickly.
Sherry felt excited and anxious going to a new location but she was happy they were getting a new home. Sherry had picked up a magazine about houses and their designs. If everything worked out, she was going to have Shane buy them a home in the woods with plenty of space and privacy so they could raise their family in peace. She was so obsessed with the idea that she had started sketching a dream home based on different houses she had seen in the magazine and online. Sherry smiled looking at the sketches before tracing her finger over hers and Shane’s names at the top of the one before putting it away.
At the small harbor at the bottom of the hill, Shane couldn’t help looking up the stairs and think of that day he walked up them for the first time, without even thinking it his left hand drifted to his chest to the place where a scar should have been, the place where Wesker’s fist had punched through and killed him. The tinge of pain was still there when he thought of it which made him close his eyes for a second. When he opened them he looked down at Steve who was looking at him funny. Shane smiled and patted him on the shoulder to let him know he was okay.
They decided to wear old worn clothes since they were going to be blending in with the crowds in town. Shane learned that nothing sticks out more in these towns than a well dressed white man let alone a duo of them. Just in case things went south they were brought a change of clothes and their equipment in two old duffle bags slung over each other’s shoulder.
The day looked to be perfect so far. There were no signs of ill weather and the sun was peaking through the thick canopy of the jungle along the river making the flowing water sparkle. Shane had a feeling the day was going to go well for the two men as they waited for Babu. After standing there without talking for several minutes Shane sighed and yawned as he stretched his arms above his head before saying, “Man, I hope he comes soon, I’m ready for a nap.” lowering his arms Shane adjusted his sunglasses as Steve chuckled, “Stop it.”
Steve pointed at Shane’s sunglasses and asked seriously, “Why do you wear them all the time? You could wear contacts you know.” Steve chuckled before looking up the river as Shane crossed his arms, before he could speak Steve continued, “Your eyes should be used to the sunshine now dude, you’ve been in it for a long time now… and don’t tell me shit that you can still go blind. Don’t you think your virus would have fixed that by now? I mean what kind of super virus heals every part of you but your eyes? Sounds like you got ripped off man.” Steve smirked looking at Shane who was tapping his sneaker on the concrete impatiently.
Shane knew Steve was playfully busting his balls but it was still a subject he didn’t like talking about. Shane hated to admit it but he was still paranoid he would go blind if he exposed his unprotected eyes to sunlight it still felt bright to him even with the glasses on.
Shane knew from experience to just ignore Steve’s verbal jabs and his teasing but sometimes it got to the point where he want to smack Steve on the back of the head and give him the worst noogie ever. But no sooner had he thought of that Shane’s mind jumped back to the day Wesker in a rare moment of humanity gave him one that day at the facility. Shane felt a rush of warmth and tingling inside his nasal cavity and felt the overwhelming sense of missing Wesker hit him. Shane inhaled deeply through his nose; he didn’t break down and kept his composure in front of Steve. It was so hard to not miss the old man considering everything he had done for him but Shane found that the feelings of sadness he felt weren’t as bad as they once were now that he had partners.
Noticing Steve was occupied now looking down river for the boat, Shane moved away towards a tree down by the river’s edge. Shane then pulled out his cell phone and opened up his photo file and slipped an earpiece into his hear. Shane’s fingers glided over the images before he smiled looking at the photo Excella had taken of the he and Wesker when they had gotten home from their jog one day.
Shane then looked at the video file of Wesker’s last will. It was morbid but it was the only thing he had left with Wesker’s voice on it. He wanted to hear the old man’s voice again but after the first sentence Shane’s eyes started to well up from his emotions which lead him to sniffle. “Damn it…” He thought to himself while taking a breath.
Shane removed his sunglasses wiping his face as he scolded himself, “Stop this Shane, you need to tough it up. Beat these emotions back down, remember what he told you…”
Shane stood silently near a tree for a moment leaning on it with one hand before taking a deeper breath. He pocketed his phone after removing the ear piece and adjusted his clothing out of habit even though they didn’t need adjusting. Feeling he looked okay Shane slipped the sunglasses back onto his face when he heard the boat approaching the dock.
As the boat got closer Shane walked next to Steve who had a look of puzzlement on his face. Shane ignored it and simply said, “Let’s get going.” Both men grabbed their bags and waited for the boat to get closer. Once it was next to the dock they hopped aboard the boat allowing Babu to continue moving. Slowly he turned the boat around just as Shane headed down into the small room seeing the dent in the wall he had made when he first woke up. A small smile crossed his face before dropping his bag on the floor next to the bunk bed. Lying down in bed Shane could hear the muffled sound of Steve talking to Babu about fishing and swimming and other things. The poor mute man could do nothing but listen to Steve drone on and on the entire ride back up the river.
Still Shane was happy Babu was keeping Steve occupied. This allowed him to finally be alone with his thoughts. His relaxation didn’t last long when an incoming message from the Black Queen beeped over his phone. Shane pulled out the phone looking at the image of the Black Queen and snapped, “What is it? Is something wrong?”
The Black Queen spoke in her cold emotionless tone, “No, I’m informing you that the movers have arrived and that your items are being moved as we speak. Sherry has stated she will be waiting for you when you come back home. I estimate the movers will be finished in about half an hour, long before your estimated time of return. Is there anything I can assist you with?”
Shane nodded and said, “Nope.” before he yawned.
The Black Queen spoke, “You are still recovering. You should rest during the boat trip which I estimate will take 4.3 hours if your current rate of speed stays constant. We can continue this conversation later if you wish.”
Shane nodded and yawned again before saying, “Yeah, sure later is best. We can talk about the flight to Canada later.”
The Black Queen’s spoke, “As you wish” and then her image vanished from the screen.
Shane laid back down on the rough bedding and sighed before closing his eyes trying to get a nap in before their small mission. Now his mind drifted suddenly he kept thinking about Sherry being alone back at the facility. Sighing in frustration Shane grabbed the cell phone again and brought the Black Queen back onto the screen and asked, “Will Sherry be okay by herself?”
The Black Queen simply stated, “Sherry is fine. She is currently overseeing the movers. In the event of any incident out of the norm I am prepared to deal with it efficiently. The building defenses are activated and the area is secured from any internal or external threats. In the unlikely event of an emergency you will be informed.”
Shane felt some relief when hearing this and he knew the building was secure, but he felt the need to make sure. Shane nodded, “Thank you.” And he yawned again.
The Black Queen spoke matter of fact, “You still require rest.”
Shane nodded again, “I know, signing off.” With that the Black Queen’s image vanished from the screen and Shane put the phone away and drifted off to a deep sleep listening to the steady chugging of the boat engine.

- Four hours eighteen minutes later
Shane slept soundly on his back listening to the rhythm of the engine as Babu slowed the boat next to the messy and worn harbor. Steve tied the boat up to the old weather battered dock in the busy fishing port. The local fishermen did not take interest in the boat as they continued their daily chores to earn money, trade their latest catch, and to continue fishing to feed their hungry families at home. Steve sometimes felt bad for these people and wanted to help them, but there were millions of them like this. Something about it depressed him but there was something more behind this feeling and he couldn’t quite put his finger on what it was.
Steve got these feelings every now and then since he was woken up by Shane but he usually dismissed them in order to work on whatever task was at hand. He watched as an older man taught what he assumed was the man’s son how to fix fishing nets and something seemed to tug at the back of his mind but as soon as the feeling hit it passed and Steve shook his head trying to clear his head.
With that nagging feeling gone he still couldn’t shake feeling bad for these poor people and wishing he had the money to help them. Steve hoped one day that the illnesses that plagued these lands would one day vanish. He felt that with Shane and Wesker’s research maybe these people like this could someday live better lives.
Sweat beaded on Steve’s forehead as he sighed heavily from the heat of the sun, it was 3 P.M. in the afternoon and the heat and humidity made everything hazy and sweltering. Steve grumbled before moving toward the stairs and down to the small room where Shane was still sleeping soundly.
The kid was tired all the time which made Steve wonder why the virus hadn’t healed him up like it should have and given him more energy but he had to consider what Shane had told him. Moving closer Steve placed a sweaty hand on Shane’s arm and shook him gently while whispering softly, “Shane, hey, time to wake up.”
Shane stirred and groaned slightly. His eyes blinked open giving off a faint reddish glow which Steve knew only happened when Shane was irritated or excited. Steve chuckle looking at Shane’s eyes as they closed again with a slight glow lighting up the man’s close eyelids. Steve chuckle because it reminded him of seeing a Jack O Lantern in the dark. Shane groaned again in annoyance as Steve laughed and said, “Rise and shine Shane, we’re at the town.”
Shane smacked his lips and mumbled, “Can’t I have five more minutes?” as he covered his eyes with his right arm wanting to sleep more. Shane was still a bit sore but he couldn’t give the excuse he wasn’t feeling well considering he hadn’t been sick since he was a kid. Feeling Steve shaking him again Shane had no choice but to sit up while fumbling for his sunglasses that lay on the table next to the bed. He managed to grab the glasses and slipped them on as he sighed heavily. Shane stretched his arms before giving off a long, loud yawn. He hunched over with his hands on his knees and groaned, “I hate feeling like this...” Sitting for a moment Shane sighed again before getting up following Steve outside.
As always the mute Babu was standing in the wheelhouse of the small boat waiting for his orders. Shane stretched again as he stood on deck before he turned toward Babu and said, “We’ll be back in about an hour or so Babu, make sure the boat is fueled up and ready to leave in case we come back early.” Babu nodded and gave a “thumbs up” with his right hand before turning around and tending to the boat.
Steve wore an old faded blue baseball cap and he put on a pair of black sunglasses. He also wore a dark green short sleeve shirt with a pair of worn blue jean shorts and a pair of battered, dirty gray sneakers.
Shane put on a worn tan straw Panama Jack style hat with a black band around it. He wore a wrinkled black and gray striped polo shirt, tan khaki shorts and scruffy black sneakers.
Shane and Steve slowly moved from the boat onto the wooden harbor, their old worn sneakers kicking up dust from the dock with each step they took following the pathway between boxes of fish and fishing supplies until they made it to the main fish market section of the port. Wooden boxes and racks filled with ice contained various fish on display as the fishmongers sliced and cleaned the fish readying them for sale.
Shane saw that most of the stands had either live or dead fish in old barrels filled with tepid water and smiled seeing how well the men here were doing with their fishing. As much as they tried to blend in with the people at the fish market, Shane and Steve still stood out as being two of the palest people there. Of course it didn’t matter to the crowd since the locals here seemed to mind their own business. The only things begging for attention were a few dogs that seemed to be wandering around looking for scraps from the fish mongers tables.
Standing out of the crowd but glared instantly seeing two burly BSAA agents moving through the marketplace. Shane glared at the two men behind his sunglasses but kept walking until Steve stopped at a fruit stand making Shane halt instantly and stand beside Steve as he browsed the fruit.
Shane knew that if things got out of hand he and Steve were a deadly duo even if they didn’t have their equipment. Shane had his gift and Steve had T-Alexia inside him, a gift from Shane’s mother. The two could be considered brothers in a sense through the virus that flowed through each of their veins. Shane chuckled at the thought and that drew Steve’s attention for a moment before he turned back to the vendor. It surprised Shane that Wesker actually taught Steve the local dialects and it annoyed him at the same time since he couldn’t tell what the hell they were talking about.
More and more Shane found himself the only person in the land that knew nothing of the people’s customs or language. Learning from the Black Queen didn’t help much since there were so many pieces of information she would cram into each lesson he asked her to give him and it became impossible to hold on to most of it.
Shane couldn't believe his father was a genius if he was able to take in all the info that the Black Queen produced from a single question. Shane still wondered how his father could do that when sometimes even the basics of this language were hard for Shane to understand. Shane eventually scrapped learning it and continued with his studies to help him continue Wesker’s work. Most of the supplies and Uroboros were being shipped to Germany, even a few sampled of the flowers that made the viruses possible.
Shane sometimes found himself being squeezed by Sherry who fell in love with the flower when she found it in a test tube in the lab shortly after being able to stand up on her own. She had one flower in particular that she had a hard time keeping alive. Shane found it earlier looking dead and was half tempted to throw it out but Sherry insisted on keeping it. Before he left Sherry had transplanted it into another pot with a small bushy plant he had brought to her a few weeks ago. It made him smile seeing how well it had grown but also frown seeing it dying with the flower. Again Sherry insisted on keeping them, for what reason, he was not sure.
Steve drew Shane from his thoughts when he handed him a small bag full of bananas. Taking it in his hand Shane noticed the two BSAA agents getting closer to where they were and he was hoping their disguises would hold. Steve whispered, “Let’s go Shane.” while scratching his head through his baseball cap before looking at the two agents. Steve walked in front of them to the other side of the market which made Shane glare at him for such a foolish thing but it did draw the two agent’s attention away long enough for Shane to duck into a nearby building. The two agents looked around again for the strange man in the hat but he was missing.
Shane stood deep inside the old building’s hallway and smiled setting the bag down in a nearby stairwell before he moved up the stairs. As he sprinted up the steps he quickly grabbed a small oval tracking device from his pocket as he reached the old dirt covered stone roof. The small device was the size of a shirt button but was made out of a sturdy material that made it hard to break and even harder to detect by normal means.
Moving toward the ledge Shane looked down at the two BSAA agents as they milled about the crowd, he could easily dispose of them from this height but that wasn’t a part of his plans. Pressing the sides of the tracker with his thumb and pointer finger, he checked his phone seeing it was synched to his GPS as a little red dot marked its location on the map. Shane grinned before looking down at the men as he pressed the sides again on the tiny oval which caused tiny metal legs on the bottom of the tracker that clawed the air as he dropped it down watching it latch onto the top of the one agent’s baseball hat blending into the button on top of it.

R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 4 Part 3
-An hour later…
Shane and Steve were able to keep track of the BSAA’s outpost with ease thanks to the tracking device. They learned the team was leaving the area within the week which lifted their spirits knowing well enough that they were not going to be bothered again as they were preparing to move.
Shane chuckled while elbowing Steve’s side as they climbed down into the boat dropping off two heavy, worn and messy sacks below decks. Babu silently watched them from the wheelhouse, a curious look crossed Babu’s face as he watched the duo’s antics but the mute boat pilot couldn’t ask aloud what they were doing and was resigned to wonder to his self what the hell they were carrying on about. Babu watched the two younger men chuckle with one another like old friends or perhaps brothers sharing playful shoulder punches before Shane wrapped his arm around Steve’s neck pulling him close in a headlock as Shane’s other hand balled up into a fist that moved feverously over Steve’s head messing up his reddish brown hair. Steve squirmed like a trout a fish out of water to trying to get away while both men laughed.
Granted Babu had done and seen this same sort of behavior before as a child and watching other children play but it was odd to see this sort of behavior coming from men like this, especially considering the seriousness of his former employer. But Albert Wesker was dead and gone and apparently so too was the strict, cold way he conducted himself and his business here. Babu just shrugged and sighed and then went back to readying the boat for launch. Babu figured if Albert had trusted these men to carry on for him that was good enough.
Once Shane released Steve’s head from his strong arm lock he whistled loudly towards Babu to get his attention and gave the boat captain a “thumbs up” signal. Babu started the boat knowing it was time to head back home. The engine grumbled and sputtered to life with a cough spewing a dark black cloud from the exhaust pipes. Shane moved toward the bow of the small craft watching the water as they headed off down the river. The steady current pulled them along speeding their trip.
Nobody aboard the river boat knew they were being watched. In earth orbit among the many satellites and manmade space junk that flew around the heavens an “abandoned” soviet satellite had been observing the river from the heavens. The cold reflective eye of its camera lenses zoomed in on the small boat as it sped down river.
Nicholai studied the images carefully and intently as the satellite’s eye zoomed in on the moving boat causing the view to pixel and blur slightly. When the pixilation cleared and the image became crisp Nicholai clearly saw Shane stretching his arms over his head and yawning. A tight smile pursed his lips as Nicholai said, “There he is.” drawing Gennady’s attention to him before looking at the screen, Shane had changed slightly from what he last saw in their files, the only difference was that Shane was wearing yellow sunglasses.
Instantly Gennedy looked at Nicholai and smiled in anticipation and asked, “Orders?” Nicholai watched the camera feed for a second and then turned to Gennedy, smiled tightly and nodded, “Proceed with Сокол Операции as planned.” Gennedy turned on his heel instantly and ran from the monitor room to deploy the men and ready the BOWs. Helicopters whirling outside as men in fully black military attire filed into the ten nondescript helicopters disguised with the familiar Peace Corps logo. The CH-54 cargo helicopters were already lifting in the air carrying “six pack” clusters of large tubular white canisters with markings that identified them as being filled with water, rice and other supplies usually ferried around the country by the peace keeping organization.
Gennedy barked out orders to the men through their radios as a large shadow fell over him for a moment, Afanasii’s capsule was finally in the air drawing his attention to it momentarily. Gennedy smirked he knew Shane wasn’t going to stand a chance against her. She was programmed to do one thing and one thing only and having seen her in action during her trials Gennedy couldn’t wait to see what she would do now that her true target was at hand.
With haste Gennedy slipped his black gloves on over his military green camouflage shirt that rested over his stripped black and white shirt. He was ready for anything as he checked his two semiautomatic pistols and pocketed a few extra clips if needed. Jogging towards the command chopper he checked his watch, and calculated the team would reach their objective with time to spare. It would be roughly an hour and a half before Shane got back to the facility. Gennedy got into his command chopper and took his seat beside the pilot in the cockpit, strapping in he slipped the headset as the loud whirling sounds of the blades was replaced with that of radio chatter, he gave the thumbs up to the pilot as they took off into the sky.
- 1 Hour 30 Minutes Later…
Steve was sitting on a metal crate on the deck of the ship as he listened to the sounds of the jungle, the chugging of the boat engine and the rushing sound of the water all around them. The rhythm of the boat was relaxing and Steve was lost in thought and drifted into a relaxed sleep. His mind kept drifting to this image of an angelic figure of a girl in tight jeans and a red vest with golden wings coming out of her back. He had dreamed of her often but it seemed like whenever he tried to focus on her face his brain wouldn’t allow it. A white haze seemed to envelope her image and the only thing he was sure of was she had deep blue eyes. Steve often wondered what this meant, who she was and what was she supposed to represent when he was awake but it was, like many things in his past, a blur of images that he knew should mean something to him but he just couldn’t put his finger on why.
In the dreams the angel never stayed long and was eventually replaced by a nightmarish vision of a wild eyed man in a red military dress uniform who was trying to kill him. When Steve tried to run these things with skeleton faces and one giant arm always seemed to reach out of the darkness from behind the laughing man in red and grabbed him, pulling him back towards his enemy. Steve fidgeted in his sleep when suddenly the wild eyed man was replaced by the naked gray woman with green hair. It was always the same, she stood in front of him looking at him as if he were an insect and then she would plunge her clawed green hand inside his chest and he would feel and see fire erupting from the wound. Steve could feel his blood turning black and boiling inside his body as the gray woman laughed at him.
Steve’s eyes suddenly snapped open and he felt cold sweat covering his body. After he shook off the nightmare he was suddenly aware of a something out of place. Steve focused his enhanced hearing past the usual jungle and river noises as he heard the sounds of helicopters. They weren’t as loud as normal ones that he had heard before but they were definitely helicopters and they were definitely not something usually heard in this area.
Dark green veins slowly appeared on Steve’s arms as he gripped the metal crate he had been resting on. His fingernails extended into dark green claws that clinked against the metal making a harsh screeching noise as they ran across it. The noise drew Shane’s attention from the front of the boat seeing Steve’s skin turning slightly green and gray as he seemed focused on the jagged patch of sky above the river. Shane was suddenly on alert scanning their surroundings with his senses trying to pick up on what had Steve tensed for a fight.
Babu was utterly confused by the young men’s behavior. He didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary. Shrugging it off, the older man continued to pilot the boat down the river listening to the music of the engine and the pops of static on the small radio in the wheelhouse. Shane whistled toward Babu and gestured for him to cut the engine. Babu did so immediately letting the river pull them along as he steered.
Steve was tensed like a jungle cat and scanning the area around them. He turned once, stood for a moment and then turned back around to Shane before saying “We have in bounded aircraft… helicopters from the sound of it… possibly BSAA, but I’m not sure. So many organizations and armies use these types of aircraft here. Do you think they might have found us?”
Shane didn’t answer the question as he pulled out his phone and speed dialed Sherry. After two rings the phone picked up. As soon as her familiar voice said hello Shane was spoke, “Sherry? Where are you?” hearing her reply Shane looked at Steve, “She’s still inside the facility.” Steve nodded and continued to listen to the approaching helicopters as Shane continued to speak to Sherry, “Sherry, has anything strange been sighted? …No? Good, get whatever supplies you need, weapons and get inside the reinforced lab, we might have company coming.” Shane waited a moment before nodding and saying, “Alright, once we arrive, we’ll get you and head down to the private airport and get out of here. …I know … don’t worry, we can handle them.” There was a pause and suddenly Shane smiled and said softly, “I love you too.”
Shane hung up and pocketed the phone. He could finally hear the helicopters in the distance. Shane whistled again at Babu and whirled his pointer finger in a circle at him signaling Babu to start the engine again. The mute nodded and suddenly the engine roared to life. They were very near the part of the river where the canopy of the jungle closed them off from view from the sky so the quicker they got to that cover the better Shane was going to feel about their chances. The boat resembled any private fishing vessel in this area so it’s not like they stood out… but still Shane felt he needed to be extra careful here.
Shane walked over to Steve and said, “Sherry’s hiding in the lab. It’s heavily fortified like a bunker and there’s no way in there unless you have our eyes.” He said looking at Steve. “Let’s hope if it is the BSAA they’re just passing through the area onto someplace else.”
Steve stayed focused on the air as he spoke, “It’s hard to say who it is without a visual but for the amount of rotors I hear it sounds like they’re moving a lot of people or equipment.”
Shane nodded, “I’m going below deck to get geared up. I want you to stay inside the cabin with Babu and keep an eye on things up here.”
After he went below and started to change into his fighting gear Shane heard the helicopters passing overhead and then fade off into the distance ahead of them. As he zipped up his vest a knock came on the cabin door and Steve spoke through it in a muffled voice, “I couldn’t see much through the canopy we’re floating under but from what I saw the helicopters were white and some of them were those funny looking cargo helicopters that look like a sprung grasshopper. So I think that rules out the BSAA.”
Shane opened the door and asked, “White? Nobody uses white helicopters around here except maybe… the United Nations or the… the… what are they called… the Peace Corps! Did you see any markings or lettering?”
Steve shrugged, “They flew too fast above the jungle covering to really see anything except the white paint jobs. Besides I checked the tracking device and according to it the BSAA are still inside their compound.”
Shane nodded, “Well that rules out the BSAA… most everyone else is strictly military all the way as far as paint schemes go… but still with that many choppers in the air suddenly heading in the same direction we’re headed in… I think we should keep going with the assumption that something isn’t right here. Call it a gut feeling, I don’t know but I think we should stay cautious until we get to the facility and know for sure nothing is wrong.”
Steve shrugged, “Okay man, you’re the boss.” With that Steve went back on deck and stood with Babu in the cabin as Shane strapped his kukri blades to his back and thought, “God I hope this gut feeling is wrong, I really, really do…”

R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 5
Sherry was breathing calmly as she looked at the metal doors before looking back at the black orb that was with her. The Black Queen was comforting to have around whenever Sherry felt alone. Even though she was never really alone anymore Sherry still had a feeling of being alone sometimes. The Black Queen was like her guardian angel against the loneliness.
Like the angel with gold wings in her dreams that seemed to protect her from the nightmares. Whenever she woke up from such dreams she would instinctively grab for the faded red vest that hung off her bed post and hug it. Somehow nuzzling against the old thing brought her an overwhelming sense of comfort and protection. Sherry refused to go anywhere without wearing the old thing and Steve would tease her about it being her security blanket. Steve could tease all he wanted though, Sherry didn’t care. All she knew was the vest made her feel strong and safe and she would never stop wearing it.
Sherry absentmindedly hugged herself and caressed the vest as she walked towards a supply closet. Approaching the door she asked aloud, “Black Queen, are they back yet?” Sherry grabbed a nut filled chocolate bar, unwrapped it and bit into it hungrily waiting for the Black Queen to respond. She was famished and so far this was the only meal she had all day due to her constant packing and cleaning since waking up.
In seconds The Black Queen linked to a soviet era weather satellite which was orbiting above their section of the world and easily hacked into its onboard cameras. Things appeared normal until the camera zoomed in on the airspace above the jungle which showed a phalanx of inbound helicopters with UN markings racing towards their location. Checking the UN database the Black Queen searched for operations by the organization in the area and found none were present in this country.
Sherry was startled when the lockdown procedure had started to seal off the room and the ever calm voice of the Black Queen spoke, “Possibly hostile aircraft are inbound and estimated time of arrival is fifteen minutes at current speed. Sherry you are not to leave this room until Shane and/or Steve come to collect you. The facility is now in lock-down mode.”
Sherry was visibly worried and asked, “What about Shane and Steve? Where are they?” The Black Queen spoke matter of fact, “Shane and Steve will be arriving shortly by boat with Babu but they will not be able to reach us before the aircraft.”
Sherry asked, “So I can’t do anything but wait? What if they need help?”
The Black Queen spoke again, “I have the utmost confidence Shane, Steve and Babu will be able to handle any threats posed by the aircraft and their occupants if they are indeed a threat to this facility.”
Sherry bit her lower lip nervously and once again hugged her vest. A nearby panel slid open revealing a several handguns, a rifle and a survival knife on a silver rack. It extended from the panel as Sherry looked at it worriedly.
The Black Queen told Sherry, “Arm yourself. In the unlikely event the walls of the facility are breached you must be prepared to defend yourself.”
Sherry sighed and walked over to the rack picking up the handgun in its holster and started to strap it to her thigh. As she did all she could think of was how much she disliked guns and how much she wished Shane were here.
Meanwhile, on the river…
Shane tapped his foot feverishly against a metal panel near the front of the boat keeping pace with his heart as it pounded in anticipation. At the speed the boat was going they would be at the facility in a little over fifteen minutes and he did not like that at all. His senses were warning him that something was amiss in the jungle around them, stalking them, watching them. Steve felt it as well but wasn’t sure what it could be. They could hear the helicopters nearby but they couldn’t see through the thick canopy to really make out where the damn things could be.
The loud snapping of tree branches and thump of metal against the muddy shore ahead of them startled the three men on the boat. Through the small hole in the ceiling of overgrown trees a white helicopter hovered and then took off. A large clamp on its underbelly was visible briefly as it flew away.
The long tubular capsule jutted out of the muddy shore at an odd angle. The closer the boat edged down the river towards it the more tense the two young men became. Shane had already drawn one of his .45s and Steve’s fingernails on his right hand flexed and grew into green claws that extended from his fingers which had also started to become vein covered, thick and green.
The two men’s eyes locked onto the container for long moments but nothing seemed to be happening. After a moment Steve asked Shane, “What do you think? Could it be a dud?”
Shane, said, “I don’t know…” and made a simple hand gesture to Babu in the pilot house of the boat, the mute slowed the boat down just long enough for the two young men to hurry to the back of the boat to watch the capsule never taking their eyes off it as they made their way to the rear of the boat. Both Steve and Shane were jolted with surprise when a muffled high pitch screech issued from the capsule.
They could hear frantic screeches and what sounded like nails scraping against metal as the capsule shook violently. Their hearts were racing as they heard the tube’s door hiss and loudly pop open and landed on the slimy bank. Instantly Shane felt his back itch when clawed reptilian hands gripped the sides of the tube and the flat, ridged head of the reptilian BOW finally emerging with its yellow eyes darting about. Faintly Shane said, “Hunter…” and almost as if it had heard him the fanged grimacing face of the monster looked toward the boat and shrieked loudly.
Babu turned instantly toward the horrible noise in the wheelhouse as his eyes widened seeing the monster, without thinking he put the boat at full throttle having it lurch forward causing Shane and Steve to tumble like toddlers against the railing of the boat. The Hunter shrieked again and sprinted towards them along the river bank.
Shane aimed his gun at the beast intending to shoot it, but he stood there trying to keep it in his sights but it proved difficult. The shot wouldn’t be very easy for Shane to take considering they were on a moving boat being chased erratically by a moving target. He was afraid of missing the creature. Looking at it he felt almost helpless like he did all those years ago in Raccoon City when one just like it very nearly killed him.
Shane could only mumble a curse of revenge against the foul creature. Steve looked at Shane and then back at the raging green monster that was running and leaping along the bank toward them. Steve looked at Shane and then back at the monster waiting for him to take the shot but he didn’t and the shore line was starting to wind towards them.
Steve said in impatient disgust, “Ugh, fuck this noise!” raised his clawed hand which was suddenly engulfed in flame and leveled it at the Hunter. Grunting, Steve’s hand launched a fireball from his palm and struck the Hunter dead center as it leaped towards them. Screaming in pain the Hunter flopped backwards engulfed in flames and landed hard on the embankment. As it thrashed wildly Steve fired another fireball at its blunt head exploding it in a shower of sparks and gore.
Shane looked over at Steve, “I would have gotten him!”
Steve smirked as the flames on his hand suddenly snuffed out, “When was that gonna be?”
Before Shane could answer the jungle suddenly erupted in screeches as a dozen Hunters suddenly bound into view out of the jungle and began chasing the boat along the river bank.
Steve ignited his hand again, “We’ll this is gonna suck…”
With that Shane and Steve began firing on their lizard-like pursuers as Babu sped off down the river. As he managed to shoot the eye out of one of the Hunters all Shane could do was pray they could finish the ugly bastards off before they got to the facility and Sherry.
R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 5 Part 2
Sherry was standing at the glass window looking into the control room, thankfully the Black Queen had made the room she was in dark so no one would see Sherry but this made Sherry a bit nervous since the only light was from the capsules and the control room booth. Her fingers were tapping against the wall as Sherry looked around inside the booth, now and then she could hear something but what startled her most was a hard crashing sound somewhere close by. When she asked the Black Queen what it was, she only got a silent reply, but Sherry knew it was something serious, something that would send chills up her spine.
The Black Queen seemed to have lost a momentary connection with the room when the massive capsule had been dropped above the forest, right down into the bedroom section of the compound, with a loud hiss, the hinges of the capsule popped allowing the massive being inside to step out, the thick black military issued boots tapped threateningly against the floor
“Sssshane…” Came a voice beyond the door making her look instantly to the securely locked metal door, the young woman was shaking in her boots as she made herself move toward it slowly listening carefully as the voice spoke again “Shane…” which gave away the feminine voice, on the other side of the door a tall figure walked away leaving Sherry lost in wonder as to who it could have been.
Moving back from the door Sherry headed to her safe spot she made herself, behind one of the many capsules within the room, upon sitting on the floor, Black Queen turned a screen on one of the control panels making Sherry look at it instantly seeing Shane and Steve hurrying up the stairs near the harbor making the young woman smile and thanked God that they were okay.
But her thanks stopped as she saw three large lizard-like creatures chasing after the men making her gasp and cover her mouth in anxious fear. When the view changed to the camera under the roof, she saw Shane covering Steve at the top of the stairs, Steve was opening the door before they both dashed inside just as the Hunters shrieked and leapt to the top of the stairs. Screeching in rage at not finding their prey the hunters clawed helplessly at the heavy doors.
Sherry’s relieved sigh of, “Thank God in Heaven.” broke the silence in the room as she got up and moved to the window looking into the control room hoping that Shane or Steve would pop into the room. Instead she froze upon seeing that tall, pale being in the hallway. Sherry looking at the black bubble on the ceiling shouted, “Oh God... Black Queen! Quickly alert them about that being that was calling for Shane!” She was trying her best to not panic but her primal instincts were screaming that this… creature was something that was seriously dangerous and deadly.
Shane and Steve were catching their breath in the waiting room as they looked back at the doors hearing the Hunters shrieking their unearthly cry before the sickening sounds of their claws against the metal door leading down to the harbor, Babu was going to defend the boat till they got back, thankfully most of the Hunters had gone after Shane and Steve giving Babu a chance to breath as he got ready.
Steve griped, “Goddamn, there’s so many of them!” as he rubbed his right arm. “I don’t think I can keep using my fire, I’m already starting to feel sore and drained… but damn!” He said shaking his head as they heard a loud crash in the hallway drawing their attention. Instantly Shane aimed a .45 watching the dust filling the hallway as did the sounds of unearthly, bubbling moans and groans which sent chills up their spines. “Oh shit…” Steve whispered now realizing what it was when the first three zombies came into view, it was clear that they were once locals from the tattered and blood stained clothing they wore.
Shane couldn’t understand this at all. To cause a biohazard on this scale was insanity. Just to get at him someone unleashed these monsters in a jungle of all places. So many things could be infected and spread this thing like wild fire.
Shane pushed his questions aside in an instant and opened fire on the shambling zombies taking care to get head shots with each round he fired. His time in Raccoon City was filling his mind and he knew not to get distracted by the how or why and never, ever hesitate. The first three fell with sickening thuds as their heads exploded with blossoms of blood, bone and brain matter. As they fell more zombies started to appear through the hole in the wall leading to another part of the facility. It looked as if they infected every fishing village leading up to the facility as Shane said in anger, “I’m getting pissed off here.” as Steve scoffed taking the other .45 off Shane’s right leg.
Steve smirked and said, “Well its obvious you pissed someone off.” as they heard hard footsteps approaching the hole in the wall. A tall looming figure came into view as the two continued firing at the zombies that seemed oblivious to this giant coming behind them. Steve seemed to hesitate in his shooting as he looked at the tall female figure that came into view. Something in his memory jolted him for a second, a pale woman with a syringe laughing a haughty evil laugh and then he snapped out of and point blank shot a zombie he had let get a little too close in the face.
The woman was tall wearing a heavy black leather coat like a biker might wear with a thick leather belt around her waist that had a giant pouch on the left side. She wore black jeans and thigh high heavy leather boots and leather gloves. Her jet black hair was cut in a short pixie/tomboy style and it contrasted the almost albino paleness of her skin. Her eyes were opaque white with a hint of blue behind the milky covering. Her face was a death mask of anger that seemed to focus like a laser right on Shane as soon as she entered the room oblivious to the undead shuffling past her. It was in this instant Shane realized she wasn’t human at all and she reminded him of the Tyrant class B.O.W.s Umbrella once made.
Her low hissing whisper of a voice rasped “Sssshane.” as she started a slow steady walk towards him, Shane swallowed hard at the sight in front of him. As she walked she pushed straight towards the milling, shuffling crowd of undead that clogged the hallway. Her powerful arms began backhanding and punching zombies out of her way like rag dolls, smashing them off walls and snapping their bodies apart.
Steve was the first to open fire at the female tyrant as Shane soon followed suit. The bullets smacked off her jacket and face but none punched through her skin only tore holes in her jacket. Her breathing was only interrupted by grunts and growls as she moved towards the duo unfazed by the bullets or the zombies. The two young men continued firing as they walked backwards as far back as they could in the small waiting room but the Tyrant wouldn’t stop no matter how many rounds found their mark on her but they both knew they needed to get past her and find Sherry before heading back to the boat.
As the two began to move in opposite directions it was clear she was after Shane which made him relieved in a sense since it will give Steve as chance to run past her and find Sherry, while reloading Shane snapped, “Steve, go get Sherry!” before ducking to avoid being grabbed and he rushed forward as hard as he could in such as small space making her move back only enough for him to run to where Steve was.
Shane barked, “Now!” pushing him out of the way as Steve hesitated slightly but did as ordered, running past the Tyrant and avoiding the zombies as he vanished beyond Shane’s line of sight. Now that he was alone Shane surprisingly felt some small relief that as he side-stepped the Tyrant’s heavy fist which bashed through the wall behind him opening it up into a gaping hole.
Shane laughed, “Thanks doll!” and jumped through the hole and dashed away from her smacking into a zombie he hadn’t realized was there. The hungry ghoul’s rotten breath singed his nose as it grabbed him from behind biting hard into his upper left arm, tearing into his black shirt and flesh making him shout from the sharp pain of the broken teeth tearing into his arm.
Shane growled, “Son of a…!” before jerking free as he turned quickly kicking the zombie on the chest knocking it back against two others that had bunched up nearby but he soon yelped when the Tyrant reached through the hole, grabbed his head and slammed him against the wall hard breaking the hole wider. Shane spun free of the Tyrant’s iron grip, tumbled and rolled hitting another wall.
Shane had felt this before when his father was training him and he pushed past the pain and got up quickly just as the female Tyrant was coming through the opening. “Black Queen, what the hell is this thing? Is it a Tyrant!?” He snapped looking around for an exit but he knew he needed to make sure Sherry and Steve were alright. Shane hadn’t heard any gunfire since Steve ran to get Sherry and he was starting to worry.
Shane looked at the Tyrant and rapidly fired his gun at her center mass hitting her in the same spot over and over again as he backed away from her. The Tyrant charged at him and until he heard something crack in her chest and a plume of purple ichor erupted from her chest. Shane kept firing until his clip ran dry as she stumbled, whispered his name, “Sssshane!” and dropped to one knee cracking the tile under it with a heavy thud before she swayed dizzily and fell face forward onto the tiled floor.
A puddle of purplish black blood started to pool around her on the floor as Shane smiled and hurried down the hallway and into the courtyard heard a helicopter whirling overhead. It hovered just beyond the tree tops making it almost invisible, the flickering sunlight that flowed through the branches glinted off his sunglasses for a moment till he heard something he didn’t want to hear …the inhuman screeching of Hunters in the woods around him.
R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 5 Part 3
-Meanwhile with Sherry…
Sherry had whacked Steve on the head hard with a glass capsule thinking he was the monster that spoke, but she was thankful it wasn’t considering how small she was and not that strong, Shane had been helping her train so she was good at some fighting but not serious ones since her build was more for sneaking and fitting into small spaces like she did when she was a child, but that’s the only thing she could remember was running and hiding from the monster in Raccoon City, there were people that she could hear in her head but their faces and names could never surface. Shane knew the reason since Wesker told him in a private report that he had typed up on Sherry, to help her forget the nightmares, one of the processes that Shane would have undergone if he didn’t accept what happened then.
Steve was rubbing his head when Sherry looked at him putting down what was left of the capsule before holding his one arm hearing the unearthly moans of the zombies coming to the door and before long they heard pounding on the strong door but she hated it, the light memories made her shake thinking of how small she was but she could feel Steve was a bit tense because of the zombies as she asked, “Where’s Shane?”
Steve shrugged, “When we came in, there was an explosion, then zombies were coming in and so did some strange creature. It’s like some female giant, we tried killing her but none of the bullets would do anything. He wanted me to get you out.” He said rubbing his throbbing skull before looking at the door hearing shrieks of the Hunters that were entering the facility.
Steve groaned before checking the .45 and frowned instantly realizing he was out of ammo but he was going to hang onto it since it was Shane’s gun. “Alright, we have to get around them and down to the dock, Babu is waiting for us. Sherry, do you think you can squeeze through the vents and distract those things outside the door?” He asked as he pointed to the high vent on the wall as Sherry looked at it for a second before nodding that she could.
Steve said loudly, “Alright, Black Queen, can you bring up a map of the vents for us?” Soon a monitor flashed to life with the blue prints to the vents allowing the two to look it over quickly. “You’ll end up in the dining room if you take that path; there shouldn’t be anything in there or the kitchen. They were locked tight so you can make it into the other vents that will take you to the armory. Once you get in there load up with as much ammo and weapons as you can carry.”
Steve turned away from her for a second, “Black Queen why aren’t the defense systems on?” He asked as the screen flickered as the word “Malfunction” appeared on screen having him kick the floor, hiding his cursing under his breath as he said, “Son of a bitch!”
Sherry was confused as to how that could happened, but considering all the explosions and sounds she had been hearing, she could understand that the damage could have interfered with the commands and that of the controls to the defenses, whoever was attacking wanted them dead or caught from what she was feeling.
Shane panted as he power kicked another Hunter before slicing it down the middle of its blunt skull with a kukri blade instantly killing it before slicing through another wounded hunter’s chest, twisting the blade in at out at superhuman speed, coring its heart out like the center of an apple. \Shane staggered backwards covered in blood and gore exhausted as he looked around the mass of bodies, limbs and shredded meat laying about him in scattered heaps.
Shane was ambushed by a pack of Hunters and the group of zombies that survived the tyrant’s onslaught followed him outside along with others that seemed to be popping up out of the jungle more and more. Shane was out of ammo and his kukris were all he had left to defend himself. While the creatures didn’t stand a chance against his strength and speed he was hurt and exhausted from the zombie bite. His system could fight it off eventually but he would need rest for it and so far it didn’t look like that was going to happen anytime soon.
Shane’s clothes were torn and tattered from the attacks and close calls he got in the fierce battle. Alone he could handle them easily but when Hunters and zombies attack in packs even someone of his speed gets tagged, especially when they backed him against the security wall that surrounded the rear of the facility. Shane lost his sunglasses during the melee when a Hunter pounced onto his back and he was pissed off the most by that. He knew he needed to find them if they weren’t broken. The glasses were a gift from Albert Wesker and he cherished them more than any gift Wesker had given him. Sure he liked his weapons and clothes but the glasses were something special, a one of a kind thing that he didn’t want to lose.
Still, Shane was exhausted and felt feverish and slightly dizzy. Shane actually dropped down to his knees not only to look for the glasses but to sit down, if only for a minute before he moved on to find Sherry and Steve. Searching through the bodies he had butchered he noticed he was bleeding more than he thought from bites and cuts as he took sitting back on his legs Shane sighed and took a deep breath. It was then he heard the crunch of concrete as he looked up and a tall shadow loomed over him.
The Tyrant stood in the hole in a wall as the light of the room behind her outlined her massive frame. She rasped, “Sssshane!” and began stalking toward him stepping on a zombie’s skull popping it like a grape. Shane got up on one knee as his rage welled up inside, infusing him with adrenaline and energy he didn’t think he had in him. Shane’s eyes flashed red with anger as he looked up at her holding his kukris as he screamed defiantly, “All right bitch! Let’s do this!”
Shane could feel his body starting to shake as the virus was working overly hard inside him to heal his wounds, revitalizing his body as his eyes glowed when he clenched his teeth as the Tyrant charged, her right hook missing Shane by an inch as he rolled out of the way as she bashed into the concrete security wall he was resting in front of.
Suddenly a static voice with a thick Russian accent crackled from the radio pouch on the tyrant’s belt. “Afanasii! Complete your mission!” Afanasii growled, “Sssshane!” As Shane darted towards her and hacked at her with his blade, slashing her jacket but only putting a thin scratch upon her skin under it. Her meaty fist swung and backhanded Shane spiraling him backwards through the air until he slammed ass first into a decapitated zombie, crushing its ribcage.
The tyrant turned around to face Shane as her blank eyes narrowed, never losing focus on her target. Shane was wobbly as he got back on his feet, a purple welt already swelling on his left cheek as he gripped his blade handles and gritted his teeth, a pink film of blood covering them as a small trickle of it ran out of his nose and the corners of his mouth.
The tyrant took a slow step towards him and then quickened her pace with each step until she was in a full run towards him. Shane panted readying his kukris as her bull charge got closer the radio on her belt crackled and the same Russian voice yelled, “We need him alive, don’t forget that Afanasii!” Suddenly Shane recognized the voice as the shock of recognition flashed across his face for a brief second before Afanasii’s right arm wound back before unleashing a round house punch that Shane dodged before dashing past her and slicing her stomach as he ran by putting some distance between himself and the tyrant that skidded to a stop before slowly turning around to face Shane again.
Shane yelled at the tyrant, “Nicholai! Can you hear me old man? Your monsters aren’t going to take me alive you Ruskie fuck! Do you hear me? If you want me, you're going to have to come down here and get me yourself you goddamn pussy, come down here and get me yourself!” Shane couldn’t hide the bitter anger in his voice. This man ruined his life and he would be damned if he was going to let him think he could take him down.
As Shane backed up, Afanasii watched him and started stalking towards him again whispering his name. Shane jerked slightly as his earpiece came to life, with Steve’s voice telling him he and Sherry were heading back down to the harbor, but the Black Queen had set the self destruct to activate in ten minutes, which would allow them time to get away.
R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 5 Part 4
Shane knew he needed to get around this Tyrant and fast. The Black Queen had told him what would happen in the event of a viral outbreak and unless they really hauled ass in the boat down river there wasn’t going to be any way they could survive this. In order to get down to the harbor, Shane was on the wrong side of the building to make a beeline to it. Thinking fast Shane yelled, “Come on bitch… free shot!” He said as he put his kukris back onto the back of his vest. He winced as he shifted his weight and the pain of his flesh parting from the deep claw and bite wounds sent burning shockwaves of pain through him.
Shane thought to himself, “I have only one shot at this…” and looking around he saw he could make a jump to the roof if he rebounded off a few old wooden crates but he knew the Hunters would be an issue and the zombies, but he didn’t care, Sherry was in danger as he took a few breaths just as Afanasii ran at him allowing him to duck from her swing before running toward the crates.
Shane cursed to himself tripping over a severed leg as he stumbled into a leap that took him to the second crate. He climbed the stacks of crates before jumping up grabbing the ledge of the roof. Suddenly he felt a vice grip covered in leather grabbing his left ankle making him scream and kick hard with his right foot planting it on the tyrant’s face repeatedly until her grip slackened allowing him to slip free and pull himself to the roof.
Shane raced across the roof, hopping and leaping over the various pipes, air conditioner units and vents until he reached the other side. Skidding to a stop he saw Steve and Sherry below him hurrying down the stairs towards the boat as a loud speaker announced, “Attention all personal! The triggering system has now been activated! All personnel are to evacuate to the minimum safe distance immediately.” As the cold female voice mechanically repeated the warning Shane felt glad his friends were okay.
Suddenly behind him a raspy voice said, “Sssshane!” as Shane spun around seeing Afanasii ripping a heavy industrial air conditioning unit off its mooring and hurled it at him full force. Shane leaped backwards off the roof and grabbed onto a window ledge below the roof as the unit smashed into the part of the roof he was just standing on sending chunks of concrete and metal debris flying over his head as the unit split apart sending its mechanical guts and coolants spilling out before smashing noisily into the ground below him.
Shane growled, “Damn thing won’t leave me alone.” As he dropped down from the ledge into a crouch, he grunted and then sprinted down toward the boat as he shouted, “Steve! Grab some grenades from the forward compartment on the boat!” Sherry gasped at the battered and bloody sight of Shane. She started to hurry towards him but Shane waved her off and screamed, “Run! Don’t worry about me! Get to the boat we have to get the hell out of here!” Sherry was going to run when she saw up on the roof the tall woman in the leather jacket glaring at Shane and she froze. Shane ran towards her and scooped Sherry up into his arms and ran her towards the boat.
As soon as he set Sherry down on the deck he saw Steve fishing several grenades out of the compartment at the front of the boat. Shane looked around in a panic as he saw the Tyrant leap down from the roof and land on the ground in a one kneed crouch with a hard thud in front of the main entrance of the building. As Shane looked back at the boat he noticed the emptiness of the main cabin and yelled, “Where’s Babu?” Suddenly the mute boat captain popped up from below decks and gave a small wave as Shane said quickly, “Get the boat started we have to get out of here now. Full speed and go with the current we gotta put distance between us and this place as fast as possible!”
Babu nodded and started as Sherry looked at Shane with increasing worry. Suddenly Steve yelled, “I got ‘em!” as he hurried to Shane who watched as the Tyrant slowly stalked towards the steps and started walking down them. Sherry watched the tyrant and felt her heart sink instantly, the memories in her mind flashing images of the bald gray skinned giant in the green trench coat chasing her as the angel in the red vest defended her from it.
The bizarre flashback lasted a second before Sherry was jolted back into reality. It was that moment that Steve knew what to do with the frag grenade, when the boat jerked forward he nearly dropped it as he pulled the pin and threw it at Afanasii with him shouting, “Get down!” as everyone did so just as the grenades detonated drowning out the Tyrant screaming Shane’s name as she was blasted backwards by the shrapnel and shockwave slamming her against the concrete stairs with a sickening crack.
Shane smiled at the smoldering Tyrant sprawled across the steps like a broken rag doll and said to Sherry, “They don’t make them like they used to.” Sherry smiled at him as he held her in his arms. Sherry’s shy smile barely hid her worry for Shane as she wiped the blood from his wounds. Her fingers brushed over the wounds as they knitted together leaving nothing but the stain of his blood on the pink scars that were left behind.
Sherry’s worry disappeared watching Shane’s tissue regenerate and recover quickly which made her smile. Shane looked down at Sherry lovingly and kissed her passionately which made her blush. Steve chuckled but he suddenly felt empty, and got this nagging feeling that he was so close to having a kiss like that once with a girl that seemed to dance at the edge of his memories once but he lost that chance and it made him feel a dreadful sadness that went as quick as it came. Steve was glad his friend, his boss, was happy.
But the happiness was short lived when they heard Babu let loose a wet rattling coughing fit which drew everyone’s attention. They had never heard the man make a sound, ever and suddenly they noticed the coughing fit that seemed to shake Babu’s entire body. The normally swarthy man looked very pale and they could see the beads of sweat pouring off his head and staining his shirt.
Shane was concerned and let go of Sherry approaching the man as he asked, “Are you okay Babu?” Sherry, her face once again etched with worry walked toward the pilot house of the boar but Babu held up a hand waving her away and shaking his head “no” at her. Shane asked, “Babu, did you get bit?” as Babu frowned sadly and nodded rolling up his sleeve and showing a bloody bandage on his forearm making Sherry look back at Shane who instantly said, “Sherry, we can’t go back to the facility to get the antivirus. The self destruct system is counting down and we’d be fighting the current to get back there… we’d all get caught in the blast… I’m sorry.”
Shane turned towards Babu as if to say he was sorry but Babu shook his head “no” in a stern manner, almost as if he were angry Shane felt sorry for him. Babu continued the fast pace of the boat as he grabbed a clipboard and weakly scribbled a lengthy message on it in pencil, and then handed the clipboard to Steve who was standing nearby.
Steve read the note aloud, “I’ll distract the men in the helicopters while the three of you run to the airfield. I will pull close to the shore where you can leap off. It has been an honor working for you all.” Steve looked at Babu, his eyes welling up as his voice cracked saying, “Babu… I’m so sorry…” Babu nodded and patted Steve on the shoulder before turning around and pointed towards the shore as they neared it, nearly scraping the side of the muddy land.
Shane and Sherry leaped off the boat as Steve looked back once more sadly as Babu pointed towards the shore again. Steve leaped and hit the ground in a crouch before turning around and seeing Babu gun the engines and take off down the river. Babu turned and waved to them before he disappeared around a bend in the river.
Shane patted Steve on the shoulder, “Come on we better hurry; I think we have five minutes left before this place is history.” Steve nodded as Shane picked up Sherry and the trio took off at super human speeds. Sherry gripped Shane tight as the men ran through the jungle which was now lousy with zombies and an occasional Hunter or two.
Sherry screamed when they were nearly pounced on by a particularly agile one that came leaping out of a tree, missing Shane’s head by inches as it swiped at him. Shane held her tighter as he dodged the B.O.W. that hit its face into a tree trunk hard knocking it senseless. As Steve ran by the dazed creature his boot heel connected to its skull smashing it into the ground with a wet crack and popping noise.
Steve ran past another and despite the fact it was in no real danger of touching them he set it and a nearby zombie on fire with his hand making it shriek, that unearthly cry made Shane yell over his shoulder, “Hurry it up kid, we ain’t got time to fuck around!”
The countdown was nearly at the two minute mark when they finally arrived at the hidden airfield. Long thought abandoned the airfield was used as a back-up escape route in case anything went wrong with the river route they would usually use. A jet black helicopter was waiting for them underneath camouflage netting to hide it from the air. The pilot and co-pilot had already pulled the tarp off and were doing their walk around check of the aircraft as the Shane and Steve skidded to a stop in front of them and the helicopter.
An explosion somewhere within the jungle shook the trees in the distance drawing everyone’s attention briefly before Shane asked the pilot, “Is this thing ready to fly?”
The pilot nodded, “Yes sir, just a last minute check. Can never be too careful.” as he hopped inside the cockpit door, the co-pilot started flipping switches starting the engine as Steve got into the gunner seat in the rear and helped Sherry into the helicopter. Shane sighed looking back at the jungle as zombies began shuffling out of the edged of the jungle. Shane sighed as he got inside the helicopter and closed the sliding rear door.
Nicholai killed these people for nothing, and had forced Shane to leave the home that his father, Albert, had given him. As the helicopter rose into the air Shane couldn’t take his eyes off the shambling creatures that seemed to be wandering after them, their arms outstretched and clawing at the empty air.
Shane was going to see Nicholai pay for every single life he took today and for everything he had forced Shane to destroy. The Co-Pilot turned around and handed Shane a small box. Opening it he saw a new pair of gold sunglasses. Frowning Shane put the sunglasses on and then put his radio headset on and looked back out the window. His anger was interrupted by Sherry grabbing hold of his hand as the helicopter started speeding away from the airfield and farther and farther away from the facility he once called home. Shane turned towards Sherry who gripped his hand tighter, which made him smile slightly.
The Co-Pilot turned back around to Shane and handed him a PDA as he spoke, “Sir? We have reports from units Zulu and Romeo.” Shane took the PDA and looked at it as the files chimed onto the screen just as a blinding flash lit up the interior of the helicopter as the sound of the explosion reached them seconds later, as the shockwave rocked the helicopter forward making Sherry cling to Shane’s arm tightly. A few warning alarms blared within the cabin but the pilot and co-pilot flicked a few switches, checked gauges and then gave Shane a thumbs-up.
Steve looked out the gunner’s seat door and watched as the giant mushroom cloud in the distance rose like an angry orange and black god ascending to the heavens. The jungle they had just run through was reduced to flaming debris and nothingness. Steve was in shock at the size of the blast radius that seemed to go on for miles and miles the edge of which ended a few miles behind where the helicopter was now flying. What wasn’t immediately vaporized in the blast was now on fire, acres and acres of jungle were in flames making it look like a literal hell on earth.
Shane read Zulu’s report from Germany, things were going smoothly and they had activated the old mansion-like laboratory in Dunkelwald, Germany. Black Queen was making full use of the facilities already and would be fully operational by the time Shane arrived. This report made Shane smile knowing that they would at the very least have a good home now that he hoped wouldn’t be discovered by Nicholai.
Shane then read the Romeo report that detailed an old Umbrella lab that had been abandoned since the early 1970’s. The road leading to it has become overgrown with foliage from the surrounding forest making it next to impossible to tell there had once been a road there. Only a trained guide would be able to lead them to the lab which is still largely intact and surprisingly suffered very little plant damage over the passage of time. There had been some movement detected within the outer facility but according to the report it’s believed to have been caused by wildlife that managed to get inside the outer building itself and not the lower levels which are still hidden and locked. All the coordinates for both facilities had now been uploaded to the PDA.
This made Shane smile inside; he’d finally be able to get some of the old testing reports from the old computers as well as samples that would have been preserved in cold storage. Even Umbrella’s long abandoned facilities Umbrella had power in the labs. They were always tapped into whatever power supply was nearby but in a way so they would never be noticed by anyone at the local power company.
Shane’s eyes soon fell onto Sherry who had snuggled up against him and fell asleep holding onto his arm. Shane let her sleep since he knew when she woke up he would have to tell her he was going to Canada while she and Steve headed to Germany. He knew if something went bad he would be better suited to handle things by himself rather than drag the poor girl into it and have to worry about her the entire mission. Just like his father, he would have to handle this alone.
R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 6
It had been a few hours since the old facility was destroyed. As Shane’s group arrived at an airport a few miles from the Atlantic Ocean their objectives were clear on what they were to do but Shane didn’t want to leave just yet. They were all exhausted, especially Shane since he overworked himself once again to stay alive. Albert Wesker told him things would be much easier but at the same time harder, but unlike Shane, Wesker was gone so he didn’t have to worry about being hunted down by a crazy, old Russian who believed that one belonged to him.
After getting into the car, Shane held Sherry close as she slept on his lap while Steve dropped on the passenger seat and was about to pass out from exhaustion. They weren’t leaving the airport area just moving themselves to a small warehouse that had beds within so the three could rest and recuperate before the journey ahead. Shane felt relieved that they weren’t followed but he hated having to part with Sherry for the few days he would be gone.
Shane understood now why Albert never fell in love with anyone. The risk to them was too great and it was too painful to be away from someone but still even though he thought he understood Albert’s motivations to be alone he also thought that maybe the reason he ultimately failed was because he was alone in the end with no friends or family to come to his rescue. Shane still felt pangs of guilt for not being there in the end but he learned from his father’s mistakes. Shane’s marriage to Sherry was new, this was supposed to be their honeymoon phase of their relationship and instead of spending it in bliss they were forced to run for their lives.
Despite this or maybe because of these events Shane’s resolve became stronger and his bond to Sherry strengthened by their trials. As he pet her hair while she slept Shane vowed to take care of Sherry just as strongly as she took care of him. Shane was determined to keep her safe and enjoy their new home in Germany. To do so he would need to run a few tests first.
His mind was so lost in thought about what to do that he hadn’t realized they were within the warehouse until one of his men told him that they had arrived. Steve was already out of the vehicle and inside the room. Steve had quickly passed out on his bed holding a pillow close as he slipped into his dreams. Shane was happy seeing him sleeping as he laid Sherry down on the bed they would be sharing together. Making sure they were safe he left the room and looked to his men giving them orders, one was to head to the airfield and get the two jets ready and fully checked for the trips to Germany and Canada, the second was to acquire Shane some new clothes since the ones he wore were falling apart quite literally, and the third was to find him a guide in Canada that knew the way to the laboratory.
Once things were set and orders given, he returned into the room and stripped out of his tattered clothing, thankfully none of his holsters were damaged nor the weapons. The kukris would require a good sanitary cleaning due to the T-virus infected blood staining them. Further more, he wanted a hot shower to clean off his blood mixed with that of the B.O.W.s he had killed, a smiled spread on his face as he looked at his skin where the claws, rotten teeth and nails tore at him and saw that there was nothing but new skin, pink scar tissue where his wounds once were. Shane just loved being able to regenerate.
Standing up wearing his boxer shorts, he moved his clothing into a biohazard bag and his weapons with their holsters onto a table while he looked for a way to wash up only to groan not seeing anything he could use. A thought crossed his mind of using one of the water containers outside but this could infect others, which he didn’t want to have. Grumbling Shane spotted a large container of disinfecting wipes. Hating the antiseptic smell of them, Shane had a sour look on his face as he used most of the wipes in the container to clean his body off, filling a second biohazard bag in the process.
Shane’s skin felt dried out and weird but he knew that he had to disinfect his body and his blades at least before going to sleep. Still Shane knew to be safe they would all need to use that decontamination shower once it arrived. Slowly a yawn escaped his lips as he soon joined Sherry on the bed, kissing the side of her neck gently before groaning getting up as his phone chimed, it rested on the table with the rest of the items he had on himself.
Checking the screen, he saw Black Queen looking at him, removing the new sunglasses he blinked before stating, “How are things going?” before letting out a small yawn as Black Queen soon showed him live footage of the damage the explosion had done to the jungle and where his home once was, there he saw the helicopters circling the area like vultures while there were men in bio hazard suits wandering about.
Shane whispered, “What the hell are they looking for…?” as Black Queen soon came back onto the screen. “Find out all that you can on what they are doing and what’s going on, they must have someone in the sky watching them and I trust that you’ll find them.” He said as Black Queen nodded before the screen went black as he looked at the time on the phone making him groan seeing it was getting late before sending a text to one of his biohazard crew to come to the airport with a decontamination van with a shower so he could get washed and sanitize his weapons. “Best not spread the infection.” He whispered before setting it down and stretched, slowly he looked over at Sherry and Steve as he smiled thinking of how well they’ve been for the past few months and soon Shane groaned not having his journal with him.
Nicholai shook his head as he looked at Afanasii through a glass window as she was lying down on an operating table, his lab techs working diligently and delicately on repairing her. He was impressed how well she had preformed and he knew how close she was to completing her mission from the live video data he had collected. The fact that Shane had survived such a beating before facing her again made him wonder how to catch the young man off guard considering the powers he gained from the virus Albert Wesker had given him, regardless…still he needed to focus on his girl. The shrapnel damage wasn’t as severe as he expected but the bullet damage that was concentrated on her chest was considerable as he watched the surgeon collect round after round from her body.
Nicholai was glad the old girl didn't mutate, that would be the last thing he would need her to do now with all things considering. The tyrant class BOW always became more and more difficult to control as they mutated from damage. He had seen that first hand in Raccoon City.
The combat data that he acquired was perfect, Shane had grown from the last time he saw the boy, weak and helpless, struggling in vain on that table. A grim smile etched Nicholai’s face remembering that night clearly, more clearly than Shane could ever remember. It was hard to imagine that was how Albert Wesker once looked while working for Umbrella… Nicholai could only chuckle in silence seeing such fear and panic in Shane’s eyes before they put him under light anesthesia. The boy had to be partially awake for the process and knowing that Shane probably heard everything being done to him but couldn’t stop it made Nicholai chuckle.
Nicholai was so lost in thought he didn’t realize Gennedy was standing next to him until he spoke, “Comrade, they’ll be finished within the hour.” which drew the older Russian’s attention to him as he snapped out of his daydreaming, if he had been startled Nicholai didn’t let it show. Gennedy paused a moment before continuing, “The abandoned Umbrella hospital facility has been found. I highly recommend insertion from the air. The area is overgrown and extremely remote, typical of an Umbrella facility but the weather patterns in the area will make it somewhat difficult but not impossible.”
Nicholai nodded as Gennedy continued his report, “The area’s population abandoned the area once the local lumber mill went out of business. We’ve found that there is still a logging trail less than a mile from the road that once lead to the hospital which can be used as a secondary escape route if the need arises to leave by ground.”
Nicholai crossed his arms across his chest as Gennedy continued, “As you deduced, there is still power being supplied to the abandoned facilities lower levels from a hydroelectric plant several miles away. Our initial scans show that there are no humans in the area so the operation will be completely unnoticed.”
Gennedy fixed his gaze on to the sedated Afanasii. “The storm front moving into the area will be the perfect cover for the operation and it will mask our presence from the boy when he arrives. With that much snow and ambient noise from the surrounding forest baffling his sense he won’t know we are there until it’s too late.” With his report finished Gennedy crossing his arms behind his back as he watched the Tyrant resting below and waited for his commander’s response to his report.
Nicholai took a deep intake of breath and said, “Good, good, continue to monitor the boy’s movements for now. The operation will proceed as planned.” Nicholai unfolded his arms calmly and fixed his jacket as he continued, “ Canada … how long has it been since I was last there?” He wondered to himself before tapping his boot against the tiled floor softly. Nicholai went over his objectives again in his head knowing this would be a lot easier thanks to his girl.
If the facility was on lock-down like the others he had been too there was a possibility the test subjects inside were still active and possibly loose in the lower levels. Umbrella and Spencer in particular didn’t exactly care about outbreaks after he became a fugitive so the labs that were “off the books” tended to be in disarray after his downfall. Still Nicholai wouldn’t need to worry about B.O.W.s ever getting close to him with his own outmatching anything the labs could have. None of the tyrant facilities remained after the Sheena Island incident so he wouldn’t have to worry about being outmatched. Still even without her Nicholai knew he had the skills to survive whatever they came across. Another lesson Raccoon City taught him those many years ago.
R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 6 Part 2
-A few hours later….Shane….
Shane smiled having been washed and in a new fresh pair of clothing, he looked at himself in the mirror before flexing and smiled as his eyes soon looked to Sherry who was walking up behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist as she rested her head on the right side of his chest making him smile softly at his wife. She looked so happy to be with him, but sometimes Shane found himself wondering if it was her own will or that of Albert Wesker’s programming, but the way Sherry looked at him, it had to be true. She cared for him greatly and would do anything to keep him safe and alive, and so he had to keep her safe, for their future.
He was not like his father; he could never replace the man, the great man, the king. Shane knew he was the king now and Sherry was his queen, but he had to do things to keep the world controlled, or at least, tame it as much as he could. But he wasn’t sure if he should carry out his father’s plans of using Uroboros and find the chosen ones, or find something else that was more tamed but he knew it could take years to do so but what was he going to do? A sigh left him as Sherry looked at him confused but hugged him more which made him smile at her before turning around to look at her as she looked up at him softly.
She smiled more as she held his hands and kissed them before rubbing her face against them as she spoke, “Shane, please don’t he worried, you’ll find out what to do. Just continue what he asked you to do.” She told before looking into his gold and crimson eyes as another sigh left him as he knelt down to her level.
“I’m not like him Sherry, I know I have to do this to make his legacy strong and pure, but I know I must start out by taking control of the black market so that I can be sure I know where all of the stolen virus samples are, you remembered the last time the t-virus got loose.” He said brushing some hair from her face. “I’m still new with this, Dad’s men are helping me as is the documents he left me, I’m a young man adjusting to the world but I’m learning fast and I know that I must take control and keep us protected and I promise that I will Sherry. I will get all that we need, have all the samples that Umbrella had developed all over the world, that’s why I must go to Canada. There’s a hospital there that’s been abandoned but Dad was certain that there were some new virus samples up there and I have to get those before anyone else decides to try it.” He told as Sherry shook her head.
“But what if someone already took them and the trip wasn’t worth it?” She asked before frowning. “I’m worried it might be a trap Shane, that man, Nicholai, is still after you. What if he knows you’re going to Canada ?” She asked as Shane huffed making her gaze stronger. “I’m serious Shane, you may be like your father but I’m worried about that….that monster woman.”
“I’ll be alright sweetie, I’ve learned that she’s being controlled so maybe I can find a way to break the connection but if not, I’ll shoot her in the head when given the chance.” He said smiling softly before nodding. “Trust me, I’ll be alright. She’s after me but if I manage to get out of her line of vision, she won’t be after me.”
“Shane, she’s like that monster that was after me, it won’t stop hunting you.” She said frowning as she looked away as her eyes started to water; it was a nightmare that she remembered, her monster father after her. Shane frowned too and soon embraced her lovingly before kissing her head. “I don’t want to lose you Shane, I’ll be lost if you died.” She told hugging him back as she cried against his vest. “I don’t want you to die, I need you. We all need you.”
Steve was chuckling as he was watched the two before speaking up, “Aww.” He teased as Shane looked at him instantly as Steve continued. “Yeah man, we need you, after all boss man, without you, how do you expect to keep the business going? Don’t make me come along to make sure you’re ass ain’t handed to you.”
“Shut up Steve.” Shane said smiling kissing Sherry on the head before looking at her. “I have to get going, have to keep on schedule otherwise we can have mistakes to happen.” He said walking over to the bed and grabbed his sunglasses before looking at the two. “When you both reach Dunkelwald in Germany, get our facility up and running again, make sure you have the Cleaners go in first to sweep out any infected or B.O.W.s in case some have survived within. Once so, have it purified so to destroy the infection within. Once I've return, we continue with the experiments with Uroboros.” He said looking at the two seriously as he checked his watch. “We have to get moving, we’ll be late.” He ordered before walking over to Sherry and kissed her again. “I love you.” He said as she smiled at him.
“I love you too Shane, please be careful.” She told kissing him again before letting him go watching him vanish outside of the room as she sighed and looked at Steve before smiling. “We better get going, we have a job to do and I expect you to not make any jokes about Shane while we’re there.”
“Hey, if I find a dead Hunter, I’m going to keep it and startle the shit out of him, it’s going to be so hysterical!” He said before the two left the building.
Shane took a seat as he opened the laptop that was before him as he looked over the charts and lab results again as he felt the jet starting to move before he looked at the men in the jet with him, advisors. He had them picked to help him with things, course, he made sure that if they were to betray them he a few methods to deal with them: 1: Kill them slowly and their family, 2: Torture them for their contacts before capturing their contacts and using them for experiments, 3: All out blood shed, 4: Using them all for experiments.
But sometimes Shane felt it was a bit strict but he had to considering his family’s business, he was the heir to all that once belonged to Umbrella and he wondered if it also included TriCell, but from what he learned about Albert Wesker, he sold himself. “Was that how he made money fast?” Shane wondered before looking at the reports now as he felt the jet taking off as he sighed before looking outside as the lands of Africa was starting to vanish and the ocean soon came into view as well as thick white clouds as he soon looked at the computer screen but his eyes were looking at the advisors who were tending to their own laptops doing business and making more deals, course Shane tapped a few keys as he started monitoring their actions and smiled faintly seeing them doing their work, he had to chuckle which drew their attention as he thought, “Dare mess with a Wesker, you’ll meet your end.” before he went back to work reading the reports of the agents.
Things were going smoothly according to the reports, the transportation of Uroboros to Germany went smoothly and without trouble, and the samples going into cold storage in Alaska arrived also without incident and this relieved Shane greatly as he started typing up the next few orders.
Recon, testing, gathering subjects, the usual but sometimes Shane felt he was missing something considering Wesker did this smoothly, course he had Jill to ensure things worked and Excella too since she worked for TriCell. Shane swallowed slightly thinking of Excella now, she had plans too but he missed how she got him into some ‘fashion sense’ and took his virginity too, God he missed her sometimes, she was the closest woman he got close to enough he wanted to call her ‘Mom’.
Leaning back against his seat, Shane looked out the window and thought, “Dad did all of this by himself, unlimited funds, loyal men, labs spread all over the world, he was indeed King, but I’m not king since he’s gone…but I still miss him..” He saw the sky starting to darken and snow starting to fall making him close his eyes as he continued thinking, “Dad, watch over me and guide me, your training for me was cut short because of that bastard and the BSAA. Please help me through all of this...” Slowly he took his sunglasses off and looked at them and looked at his reflection before looking out at the dark clouds, he was slowly adjusting to not having to wear them but he was still a bit paranoid of losing his vision even though he was fully healed, inside out and outside in. Slowly he looked over at the others with his gold and crimson eyes, he studied them over carefully before looking back at the laptop, he was getting worried about Sherry and Steve now, thus he slipped his sunglasses on again over his eyes, he grabbed his cell phone before getting up from his seat and moved to a more private spot in the small jet lounge as he spoke, “Black Queen.” as she instantly appeared on the screen as he continued, “Status report on Sherry and Steve.”
She acknowledged him with live satellite feed of them still in flight as she spoke, “They will arriving at their destination in approximately 2.5 hours, once landed, armed escort will proceed to the town Dunkelwald, where they will be taken to your new home that your father had set up in case of an emergency.” She told on her cool voice as Shane nodded while she added, “Once you have landed, you’ll be escorted to the small town of Ashfield, there you will meet your guide. You should arrive to the abandoned hospital in roughly two hours; there your guide will wait for you outside of the gates.” She told as Shane nodded and she continued, “Your equipment is in the back compartment of the jet, with the coldness in the location of the hospital and with weather reports, you will have to dress warmly since it is snowing, a blizzard will be coming in once you reach it, I highly advise that you take shelter inside immediately. Your guide will give you supplies for the night.” She told.
“Will he stay there to escort me back?” He asked as she nodded to him. “Good, I don’t want to get lost out there in the cold.” He told before looking around the small room he was in. “That is all for now Black Queen, contact me with updates on Sherry and Steve and also reports from the men in the field.” He ordered before putting the phone back onto his belt as he looked for something to eat, he was content finding chicken noodle soup and crackers, plus he grabbed some grape juice before sitting down in the small room to eat his meal. “Best not get the papers messy.” He chuckled savoring another bite of the soup remembering the one night he got it before while later that night he and Excella had made out in the bathroom. He smiled thinking about before swallowing as he continued his meal as a speaker announced “Landing in 15 minutes.” As he hurried eating, this jet was faster than he thought, course it was something his father had made in order to get to places faster.
R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 6 Part 3
Finishing up his hearty meal, Shane returned to his seat and buckled up before looking at the men with him, he hoped they continued with their objectives before he fixed his gaze on Wesker’s market statistics on the laptop and smiled seeing their funding is still going up and up, he just hoped there wouldn’t be another serious viral outbreak again but then again, it wouldn’t be blamed on him, but terrorists or even his father, shaking his head Shane looked outside as he saw the airport and relaxed for the landing, if something happened, he should be able to survive if he had to jump, he had to considered his father survived such a fall before and that was when Jill Valentine tackled him out of a window down off a cliff. He was jolted out of memories feeling the jet touching down and he smiled inside knowing he was now closer to returning to Sherry and Steve, once they were stopped and escorted to the private hanger, Shane stood up and looked out the window seeing his gear being taken out and loaded into the SUV, he waited till the advisors were off before heading to the steps and stood up looking down at the group of men waiting for them, he saw fear, gladness, respect, honor, for the new king, even though he didn’t even know them but knew they were business men and there were guards as well. Apparently there was going to be a brief meeting on the trip to Ashfield.
Once down on the ground he was greeted with handshakes and introductions from all over the world, the United Kingdom, Russia, India, Japan, Brazil, South Africa, Iraq and North Korea, the rest of the world was going to meet him eventually. He couldn’t believe how popular Albert Wesker was let alone have all these men know about Shane and knew he was the new king, that he was the god. He felt a bit honored and a bit unsure of himself about the business but he was thankful that Black Queen was going to be helping him through this.
The meeting started a moment after he got into the SUV, thankfully Black Queen was there waiting for them all on the screen as Shane sat in the middle of the group as she nodded to all of them before bringing up the latest statistics as Shane listened to the men talking about what they would be needing and the new things they were willing to have him use to improve, but Shane wasn’t used to this and he looked at the screen as Black Queen’s camera read his body movements, his facial movements and his eyes too and knew she had to help him. “We will accept a few samples; shipments can be handled easily and without issues.” She spoke as Shane nodded.
“We will test the new samples, if we get something, we will gladly sell them back to you.” Shane added as he hoped he said it correctly as the men were soon speaking to each other as Shane continued. “If you have issues with it, I can do business else where and guarantee that you all will not be doing business with me again and I will have you all killed so I have no leaks.” He said coolly as the men looked at him before they all nodded to him as the business continued on now with the selling of B.O.W.s, Shane felt sick inside with this. “B.O.W.s will cost you a bit more.” He told seriously. “A business man of my standards needs to keep the business open.” And with that he listened to the men talking and looking at him but he didn’t care, he had to keep the business open, the selling standards his father had set up was easy to follow, buying a Tyrant class B.O.W. cost a lot more than everything else since it took a while to make one but with time and money, it would be done in a snap, with some minor side effects to none whatsoever.
The meeting lasted all the way to Ashfield and Shane shook their hands and smiled at the success of the business deals, money payments to the bank accounts in Sweden and others world wide would be once again filled with more money, all of which Shane had inherited from Albert Wesker. “It was pleasure doing business.” Shane said to them before returning to the SUV and sat down inside rubbing his arms, outside it was snowing steadily and he wasn’t properly wearing clothing for this, sure his combat attire was good for it but he still got cold. “Let’s move to the hotel that we have occupied so I can get ready for my trip.” He ordered looking back outside and smiled, he missed seeing snow and he sighed in content watching it falling all around them, upon arriving at their destination, Shane moved inside and was escorted to the room where his equipment and clothing were waiting for him. Getting changed into a dark navy blue Navy pea coat and back into his black jeans, he smiled getting his boots on and fixed the blue scarf around his neck, as cold as it was outside, he would need the extra garment so not to freeze again the blistering cold. Shane thought of wearing a hat but he was certain that he would be fine once he went inside the hospital, grabbing his black winter gloves he fixed his sunglasses again even though he knew he wouldn't need them at this time of the day and with the winter clouds blocking out the sun, he wouldn’t need to worry about going blind, but for now, he wasn’t going to scare his guide.
Grabbing his guns, he slipped them into their holsters hidden under the coat before he looked at the kukris, he would have to leave them behind… “I don’t have to, the guide can carry them.” He said to himself and smiled. “Never know, might need them to cut branches to start a fire.” He told himself as he collected the twin blades and left the room as he handed them to one of his men. “I want you to put them in the gear my guide will be carrying, with all things considered, if we get snowed out there, I best have them.” He told as the man nodded and left as Shane fixed his scarf once again, rotating his shoulders Shane went back downstairs and raised a brow. There was a man in a winter attire and fur hat that Shane had seen in a movie once with two old fishermen and it seemed to be out of place on the man who was fixing his pants and shirt before looking over at Shane with such green eyes that they seemed like they were take from a computer image, plus the man appeared to have been needing a shave.
The man was looking Shane over as well and chuckled before walking over and held out his hand to him giving a half smile, “I’m Alex Key, the Key to finding things in the woods.” He chuckled with a light French accent that Shane found interesting as he shook Alex’s hand firmly. “You’re no fool, but I can tell you that you’re anxious for the trip, your boys already gone through the gear five times already, what are they expecting, a Christmas card?” He asked chuckling as Shane smiled and chuckled too, this man was lively and ready to joke, if he had met Albert Wesker, he would have been silenced quickly.
“Nice to meet you Alex, the men are doing a routine procedure to ensure my safety and that we are prepared to head to the hospital.” Shane told as he motioned to walk outside and Alex followed rubbing his chin. “Have you been to the old hospital lost in the woods?” Shane continued as Alex nodded.
“I’ve been there once, but you can’t get in unless you’re an animal, the old wall and fencing blocks a lot of trespassers from entering it, plus I’ve heard stories about the place, when I found it on my hike, I high tailed it out of there after checking the walls, place gives me the creeps and not the good kind.” Alex told shaking his head. “Sometimes I wonder if the place is haunted, some kids go up there and say they see something in the windows or saw a quick image in the woods, but we told kids to stop going up there since someone spotted large cats up in that area and they’re scary as hell up close and personal!” He exclaimed as Shane looked at him and a Raccoon City memory flashed in his mind of the infected zoo animals and the lioness that nearly killed him, Alex was looking at him confused. “You alright man? You kinda went pale there.”
R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 6 Part 4
Shane took a breath and nodded simply to Alex before looking at him as he said, “Did anyone draw it out or take pictures of these large cats?” He asked before fixing his blue scarf as Alex adjusted his hat and shrugged slightly as Shane studied him carefully. “I take that’s a no?”
“Those that saw them don’t like talking about it… some of the older folks call those Grimalkin, grey cats. What I was told, they’re nasty creatures…” Alex told rubbing his hands together before fixing his fur hat. “Brr… glad I brought warmers...” He chuckled before heading over to his bag once Shane’s men were out of the way before he tossed something to Shane that looked like a regular washcloth but upon further inspection he found it was sewn shut and had something inside. “Give it a squeeze, it’ll keep warm to hot, up to ten hours, we should be back before then but it’ll keep you warm. This cold can be deadly if you don’t get prepared, you should wear a hat too.” Alex told as Shane slipped the cloth bag into his coat after squeezing it.
Sealing up his coat he looked at Alex getting the hiking pack onto his back before shaking his head, “I’ll be alright, we shouldn’t be long, and once we’re there we will be taking shelter inside and can get warmed up. All we’ll be doing is taking shelter before I go see what I can find.” He spoke as Alex nodded. “Lead the way.” He said to the man as they started walking as the snow continued to fall around them and Shane found himself shivering slightly from the cold, how long has it been since he last seen it snow? Was it nine years? “God, I really am behind...” He whispered watching the snow as they entered the woods following a small hiking trail along a stream that was half frozen, this left Shane wandering his thoughts as he followed Alex, a small green glow stick on the backpack kept Shane alerted to where the man was.
His thoughts were of Albert Wesker’s plans, if he had succeeded, would the world have been cold like the world that was around him? Or would it be lively and the people renewed? Shane found himself wandering if he should unleash Uroboros onto the world to get it over with, or let the world continue to spiral out of control. He was slowly catching up with things but he learned how crueler the world had become in just nine years, humans were getting out of control, the evil in the world keeps growing while the good is dwindling and becoming rarer to even see or hear about, on the news there is rarely any good news to be seen, chaos is what the world was falling into. Taking a chilly breath he climbed over a fallen tree and moved around a bush as he continued thinking. If he unleashed Uroboros, he would have to deal with it before gathering up all the survivors and declare that the world has been reborn and that he would guide them, and Shane shook his head at Wesker’s ideal of being a god, any that opposed him would be punished, that was for certain.
Alex paused and Shane did too as he looked around carefully with his eyes as he listened carefully, there were no dangers, his senses didn’t find anything and so he looked at Alex, the poor man was tense having to lead him to the hospital. He felt sorry having to drag him into this but finding the place was harder than one would think, the old road to it was gone, aerial entrance was almost impossible with any storm about to come in, but what annoyed Shane the most was that he was having a hard time keeping his senses straight, the falling snow and the sounds of the forest got him on edge, he would have to rely on his line of vision. The falling snow felt so enchanting to him, it actually made him feel at peace as they started moving again as Alex pointed at a few man made objects that was over taken by nature, a pile of bricks, a water pipe, hell, they even found a car that was being consumed by a tree. Shane smiled at how amazing nature was at taking back what was hers.
Shane lost track of time since the snow was amazing for him and Alex kept silent, a few times they got spooked when a deer would suddenly run or would run past them but they haven’t encountered anything dangerous and Shane sighed as Alex looked back handing him some fresh jerky, the spicy meat strips were delicious as Shane smiled and thanked him while munching on the meat as he soon noticed that their trail was actually an old road that soon forked left and right, Alex told him that this was the old roads leading to it, nodding Shane continued to follow him on the left path which revealed a long destroyed bridge and metal pipe, Alex jumped across the four foot stream and almost slipped in the snow but caught himself, “I’m good.” He said finally breaking the long silence as he looked at Shane while holding out his hand to help Shane across if he was to slip, not wanting to be rude to the nice gesture, Shane gripped Alex’s wrist and jumped across with ease. “Alright.” Alex said nodding as he continued, “We’re getting close…brr…just ten more minutes if we don’t get attacked by the Grimalkin, I certainly don’t want to fool around...” He said grabbing a pistol out from his pants that Shane hadn’t noticed when they first met. “Best to be ready you know.” Alex told him as Shane nodded in agreement as they continued following the road, that’s when Alex found something strange as they were drawing closer. “Hold up...” He said softly shining his flashlight on the snow seeing blood as Shane walked over to see it. “Hmm, something must have gotten attack here…” Alex whispered as Shane looked around carefully as he listened.
“Let’s keep moving.” Shane ordered nudging Alex along before quickening their pace, at long last Shane saw the stone wall covered in moss and snow, he looked at how tall it was before looking at where it leads, and right now they were at a corner of the compound. “Where can we get in at?” He asked as Alex was taking his pack off.
“We can’t get in that easy, the front gate is somewhere and I have no idea where, hell, I don’t even know which corner of this place is, possibly front. I’ll give you a boost.” He said moving next to the wall before they both paused hearing something, it was an annoying sound of loud gurgled squeaks and hisses. “Shit, come on!” Alex snapped at Shane as he held his hands together to give Shane a boost up, Shane didn’t want that, he wanted to throw Alex up and over but hurried as he climbed and Alex pushing up. “Get over!” Alex grunted as Shane climbed up onto the top and reached down to help Alex up but was giving the bag first.
“Hurry Alex.” Shane said soon seeing movement coming from the far right drawing his attention seeing something horrifying. There was about six large rats coming right toward Alex, Shane saw their red eyes shimmering in Alex’s flashlight revealing more of their bodies. Long sharp claws on their feet, oversized teeth in their snapping mouths, patches of their fur were missing from their bodies but there was something else that made Alex back up quickly, the rat’s spines and tail were out of the skin of the foul creatures and were solid looking. “Alex, give me your hand!” Shane snapped reaching down but the guide opened fire before running as Shane watched as the rats hurried after Alex. “Shit!” Shane snapped but heard Alex shouting for him to get inside. Cursing at that, Shane jumped down into the compound as he looked around, he grabbed the bag and hurried toward the large building in the distance of the large courtyard.

Shane slowed his run as he tossed the bag next to the building before turning around looking for Alex or at least to hear him but the falling snow and the sounds around him, he couldn’t keep his senses even, he didn’t sense Afanasii lunging down at him from the roof of the hospital till he felt a strong grip on his left shoulder that turn him so fast that he was greeted with a strong punch across his face as she landed right on top him shattering the old stone right underneath Shane’s body. She looked down at him as his nose started bleeding as a bruise started appearing on his face, his sunglasses were lost in the snow as he looked up and saw Nicholai on the roof crouching down with a sniper rifle in hand, he was ambushed and was alone. He grunted feeling her jerking him off the ground wrapping her left arm around his neck as his blood fell onto the black leather suit she wore and Shane growled as she winched his right arm out and to the side holding him tightly causing him to grip her arm with his free hand as he tried to get her to let go before feeling a shot of sharp pain erupting in his right arm along with a loud bang, Nicholai shot him and he cried out closing his eyes tightly. “Damn it!” Shane snapped struggling hearing Nicholai speaking to Afanasii.
“Hold that bastard still.” Nicholai spoke watching Shane struggling to get free as his old girl kept a firm on him as he lined up the next shot carefully as he saw Shane jerking forward hard just enough to have the tyrant to slip on the snow as he head butted backwards cracking his skull against her own, this was enough leverage the young man needed to break free as he turned sharply landing a strong hit on her face.
“Bitch!” Shane snapped at her, as he was about to attack her again a sharp pain shot through his body and he collapsed to the ground almost instantly, a new bullet wound right through his back that erupted out of his chest, right through his heart. Nicholai smiled seeing him on the ground perfectly still before standing up shouldering the sniper rifle.
“Collect him.” He ordered to Afanasii as he watched her kneeling down collecting the young man into her arms before heading to the front doors, Nicholai smiled slightly as he turned around walking toward the stairs leading him back inside, handing the rifle over to one of his men he brushed the snow off himself and tapped his boots against the wall freeing them of caked on snow as he proceeded down the barren hallway finding Afanasii laying Shane down on a gurney as two of Nicholai’s men were stripping him of his weapons and coat as leather straps were being tightened over the man’s wrists, ankles and torso. “Take him to the operation room; we must collect our samples and data quickly.” He ordered calmly as he looked at Shane. “At least you haven’t forgotten your old friend Nicholai.” He told watching them wheeling Shane away.
Coming soon, Chapter 7!!!
R.E.S.S. 2 - Ch7
Sounds flooded into the darkness as the doctor wheeled Shane down the lit hallway, the dull clanking of the gurney wheels on the tiled floor mixed with the sharp clacking rhythm of shoes matching the beat of Shane’s heart. The vital organ was healed enough that it started beating in Shane’s chest; the virus inside him had once again resurrected him from certain death. With the renewed beating came a weak pulse that gradually increased to normal causing his unhealed wounds to weep. Shane’s right hand dripped fresh blood that fell from his fingers that lay over the edge of the gurney. On the floor the spotty red trail attracted no notice except from the infected animals that could suddenly smell it.
Slowly Shane opened his good eye as he saw the lights passing him overhead. For a second he felt panic grip him thinking he was still a boy back in the asylum and everything that had happened was some drug induced dream but then as quickly as the feelings and thought hit him it faded. Suddenly he heard a voice above him, “Time for you to rest, this will end soon.”
Upon hearing those words Shane blinked trying to adjust to the lights when he was suddenly pushed through two doors and a brighter light was soon blasting him in the face. The harsh halogen lights forced him to close his eye as he tried to block it out with his left arm but found it was somehow stuck. Leaning his head up a little to look down at his arm he saw it was strapped down, blinking he looked at his other arm seeing the same thing as he soon noticed straps across his legs and his torso.
Shane growled in anger pulling hard with his left arm snapping right through the leather strap startling the doctor that was in the room with him. Arm free, Shane shaded his face from the light that was shining down on his face. Blinking the after image of the bulbs from his vision he noticed the light fixture had a camera attached to it. Shane was puzzled but he quickly pushed his curiosity aside, he was fatigued but not so worn out that he’d stay strapped down and put up with this.
Getting his bearings Shane knew he was in an operation room and saw surgical tools and medical supplies of some sort on a small table close by. Gripping the leather strap on his torso with his free hand Shane easily ripped it off before sitting up and ripping his other arm free as he saw the doctor sprinting out of the room. As soon as the doors shut behind the fleeing doctor Shane heard a sickening roar that reminded him of the lions he had seen as a child only it had a stranger gravelly strain to it.
The roar drew Shane’s attention toward the glass windows on either side of the large double doors he had been wheeled through moments earlier. The doctor continued running looking around nervously when suddenly a massive gray form jumped down out of the ceiling in front of him. The man screamed and skidded to a stop before scrambling back towards Shane.
The doctor had almost reached the doors when the bounding gray thing pounced on his back sending him headlong into the glass smashing his head into the thick pane leaving a spider web of cracks. The man screamed as a massive set of fangs closed in around either side of his head crushing it. His hands flailed as his skull crackled like a giant walnut being crushed in a nutcracker sending an explosion of blood, bone and brains against the glass.
The man’s body spasmed and slid down the gore covered glass. Shane blinked and saw the glowing yellowish eyes through the smeared away blood before the dark cat-like shape moved back away from the glass into the dark slowly dragging the dead doctor’s corpse with it.
Shane took a deep breath and waited for minutes watching the windows for any movement. When he was sure nothing was out there he looked around the dusty and cobweb covered room, he didn’t see much of anything out of place of a normal hospital beyond the fact it hadn’t been in use for ages by Umbrella. Gripping the restraint across his ankles and tore it off before holding his arm and checked on the gunshot wound he’d gotten earlier. The wound had stopped bleeding thanks to his virus induced healing factor.
Shane smiled slightly as he rubbed his sore face. Sighing he got down off the gurney with a little stumble. He still felt lightheaded and decided to kneel down to get his bearings.
Meanwhile in Dunkelwald, Germany…
Steve rested on his new bed before brushing the sheets gently while trying to settle down, it was a long day for him as well as Sherry who was tending to her plants in the laboratory hidden in the woods, so long abandoned now was alive again with their presence as well as a few guards and lab techs going about their work in the mansion. Sherry hummed gently looking at a dying flower she had transported here, it wasn’t her favorite flower but she loved her plants. The pot was broken and the soil was very dry causing the plant to start withering, she frowned holding the flower before wiggling the broken pot in her other hand just as her hand slipped cutting on the sharp edges causing a rush of blood to fall onto the plant and soil when she jerked her hand back, she had gasped which Steve had heard but he stayed in his bed knowing that Sherry would be alright, figuring she saw a mouse or possibly got startled.
Sighing he closed his eyes to sleep for the rest of the early night/morning hours, his mind and body soon fell into the waves of sleep, in his dreams Steve found himself naked and underwater. Suspended in the warm water his eyes moved about carefully at the strange dream as he heard crying, turning slowly he soon saw a woman, her soft face, her blue eyes, her dark red hair, all greeted him as he knew her. It was her, it was the angel and inside his chest it tore at him seeing her crying, she was reaching to touch his face but she vanished in a burst of bubbles in the endless water around him. Pressure built on his chest as he felt numb and paralyzed, the surface was just above him and he could not get to it as the pressure in his lungs built greater and greater, begging him to inhale the ocean water.
But it all changed suddenly as he felt himself collapsing onto the metal grated floor, he gasped for breath while coughing all the more, to expel the water he had taken in from the ocean but it was gone, replaced with a pure bright white room. Looking upon the floor he coughing to spew forth turquoise fluids from his mouth and lungs, the air was frigid and painful to inhale at the given moment. Shaking he saw a pair of black boots close by, his emerald eyes followed up the legs as he soon saw a man he knew who was giving him a sinister smile. Albert Wesker.
Startled awake from the sleep, Steve looked around the room before fixing his eyes on the clock as he then looked at his clawed hands gripping the bed and pillow so tightly it had torn the materials. His body was racked in sweat as he got up looking around before looking back at the bed seeing his had spat up some fluids from drowning. With speed he moved to the bathroom and flipped on the light to look at his self in the mirror seeing his green veins and spikes on his shoulders starting to come out from the horrid nightmare… but she was there.
“…Angel…” He whispered softly before closing his eyes remembering her face as a small smile slid over his terrified face, he had her face in his mind, he knew her face but he couldn’t say her name no matter how hard he tried to think of it. “I know your face…” He said softly as he smiled touching his own. “…I know I will find you again my angel…” He told feeling relaxed but then his mind moved to Wesker looking down at him which made the man groan and look around still spooked. “I…I should check on Sherry...” He said to himself leaving his quarters as he moved to the room next to his across the bleak hallway, upon seeing her resting on the bed in the half finished room, he sighed moving to the bed as he saw her bandaged hand. “Oh...” He whispered realizing now why she had gasped earlier, taking a breath he climbed into bed with her as he lay down snuggled against her back to try and ease away the night terror. It wasn’t going to go away…
R.E.S.S. 2 - Ch7 - Pt2
Back at the hospital…
Shane managed to recover from his dizzy spell as he rose to his feet while his hands were clenched tightly upon the gurney of which he had be laid upon. Looking at the bed he felt his stomach turn remembering the asylum and it made him snort before looking around the room again trying to collect what happened before everything went dark on his mind. The last thing he recalled was yelling at the female tyrant, after that there was nothing…but he swore he heard a voice saying ‘You need to wake up.’ Part of him wanted to believe it was his father from the great beyond telling him to wake up, another told him it was Sherry wanting him to hurry back home to her.
Moving toward one of the counters he found a clipboard with some medical notes, he blinked a few times seeing it was about him, he cursed mentally as he read it…
‘Subject: Shane has increased in height and muscle. Reported death in March was false and he is alive. Examination of subject shows no scarring and health attributes. Virus given by Albert Wesker is full success; subject recovered and gain same strengths. Weaknesses are unknown at this time. New updated look of subject is eyes, they are no longer blue but crimson and gold colored, unlike normal pupils they are slits.’
Shane fixed his gaze on the human image they were providing with this and saw some scribbles and arrows pointing to key spots on his person that would give him away with ease, his key factor at the moment was his eyes. Blinking, he soon saw a number on the bottom of the page ‘9830’ which made him wonder if it was a key code. Taking the paper he checked the rest of the counter finding nothing of use besides an old can of first aid spray and handgun ammo which wasn’t going to help him since he had no pistol. Not taking any chances he pocketed the ammo as well before moving to the bloodied window, there was nothing out there expect for a large mess of blood and a blood trail. “Come on Shane, you’re a weapon, you’re whole body is a weapon.” He told himself mentally as he moved to the doors, opening them slowly he gazed at the floor seeing torn flesh and clothing with the blood and God he wasn’t getting any more used to the smell of it. “Pull yourself together Shane, you’ve survived Raccoon City, you’ve smelled worse.” He told himself as it was true.
Wrinkling his nose he looked at the hallway seeing nothing, taking a breath he moved forward keeping his wits about him as his boots clanked against the tiled flooring. Staying close to the wall he wanted to avoid stepping in the blood in case more of those cats were about and he soon found a door on his side of the hallway, he slowly entered seeing it was a lab filled with two types of cages, large and small ones. They lined the one side of the place and he gagged covering his nose smelling something horrid. The lab seemed decent expect for cobwebs, dust and the smell, it left him wondering what they had done here. The cages from what he was able to see were for rats and cats; he even saw bits of fur inside them. Moving toward a computer console against the wall he stopped seeing one of those large rats laying on the floor around the testing counter. It was missing its legs and tail with its entrails missing from its cavity. “At least it’s dead.” He said softly looking at the computer screen before flipping it on, the Umbrella logo melded onto the screen before showing the desktop and files on the left side, he crouched down and took the mouse in hand as he moved it over opening one of the files marked ‘WISP’.
The file opened showing photos of those rats Shane had seen and the one that was dead close to him, the file spoke about them but the date seemed…strange. 2009. Looking more closely he seen another date, 1970.
‘Experiments with T have turned out effects or riving dead tissue, but the effects does not revive the host. Testing with the rats has given us same results…’ The data seemed corrupted as he scanned his best to read what he could but there was nothing else besides the new part mentioning how T mutated and was now classified by Nicholai as ‘T-M’, T-Mutant virus. Shane found this interesting, a new virus and Nicholai was here to steal it, but apparently his expendable lab techs failed in keeping this file hidden. Reaching for his phone Shane soon realized that it was taken from him as he cursed and clenched a fist. “Damn it.” He said bitterly as he printed the file off before he pocketed it, once he was able to find his gear, which happened to be with Nicholai and inside the backpack, he was going to keep file of this information before burning this place down…or at least blow it up without being trapped inside because of Nicholai.
Gazing at the dead rat, classified as Wisp, Shane smirked being all the wiser. Nicholai was going to having troubles with these vermin in the hospital, even if he too was dealing with them. But Shane was faster and stronger than the old Russian. Taking a breath, the son of Albert Wesker moved around the lab in hopes of finding something useful for him when he would find that bastard again. His eyes glowed a little bit brighter thinking of Nicholai, he was going to pay dearly for all of this, and he was going to strangle the Russian to death; to watch the life fade from the man’s eyes.
“Perfect.” He finally said collecting an old flashlight that rested in a drawer, flipping the switch it didn’t come to life but after a few gentle taps it flickered to life allowing a sigh of relief to pass from Shane’s lips. He knew this would come in handy in sections that might be dark, holding the flashlight in a decent grip he left the lab after checking the rest of the draws, his findings he pocketed were: 9mm ammo, mixed green herbs, and a single blue herb. “Hard to believe these herbs are here, I remember growing them when in Raccoon.” He said softly walking down the hallway as he listened carefully before turning the flashlight on when he saw the elevator and stairs leading up, it was semi dark but he certainly wasn't taking any chances of ambush.
Shane looked around once he reached the top of the stairs before listening carefully for anything. Silence, he sighed as he saw a map before him and approached it seeing how big this hospital was and the various floors and rooms. He was on the first floor, nodding he pulled the map off the wall and freed it from the glass casing it was in. Pocketing it he turned left and moved down the hallway checking the doors as he went before stopping hearing something, skittering. “Those rats again.” He thought as he cursed not having a weapon, but he was one. Taking a breath he continued down the hallway checking the doors till one opened, he slipped inside and closed it gently just before the rats entered the hallway and scurried past. “Wisps are annoying.” He thought checking the examination room he was in. It was old but still looked a little good with all things considered, but he hated how it made his stomach churn. Checking around through the years of dust and plaster he found more ammo and a knife making him grin before sticking it into his boot for safe keeping.
Clearing the room he moved to the door and listened, it was clear once again as he stepped out and continued on till he found a registration booth and smiled pushing the door in. He saw a lot of broken glass on the floor and tables, the computers still had some power but when he tried to turn the screen on it soon shot leaving him with nothing, cursing lowly he saw an old typewriter and ran his fingers over the keys, he remember seeing a few at Raccoon City. Checking around again he soon got down onto his hands and knees checking under the counters as a big grin appeared on his face as he saw a gun still in the secret holster, pulling it out, he blew the dust off and checked it. “A Beretta.” He said checking it over, it was loaded but he was worried that as old as it was in this place, it might jam or even be rusted. “The chamber slides back, the magazine slides out and in perfectly, loading is a breeze.” He said before standing up. “I just need to test fire it on something.” No sooner than he had said that did he saw a hole appear in the wall near where the bathrooms were and out popped a head of a Wisp making him glare at it and take aim.
The gunshot echoed in the building drawing Nicholai’s attention from the third floor of which he and his men, as well as Afanasii were residing. The old Russian listened carefully as Afanasii was locked on the corridor of which they were standing in, there wasn’t another sound after that and Nicholai knew. “He’s awake.” He said coolly before looking back into the room where his men were in collecting samples from a restrained Wisp. The thick glass separated him and Afanasii from them so to be on the safe side. “He’s in for a surprise.” He said watching the Wisp struggling against the restraints it was in before a silenced gun was used to silence it permanently as Nicholai checked his watch.
Downstairs Shane poked the dead Wisp with the knife and sighed, it was dead and the gun worked smoothly. A direct headshot to it killed it but he was curious about it but shrugged it off before straightening up hearing footsteps, he turned his head toward the sound before hearing a radio crackle. Clenching a fist tightly he moved in the direction while holding the gun ready as he soon felt something against his leg, by the time he realized what it was he felt great pain wash over his legs and chest as a loud explosion deafened his ears as he was on the ground. It took a moment as Shane groaned sitting up slowly as he shook his head and held his chest with an arm, he had set off a claymore. Getting up he cursed at not having noticed it as he picked the handgun up and moved forward with a slight limp, he couldn’t believe how he didn’t see it, Albert Wesker taught him to keep an eye out for such things.
Upstairs, Nicholai had seen this unfold from a monitor and chuckled lightly, the boy didn’t notice the trap at all and he knew it was only a matter of time till he was too weak to continue and the capture would be easy once again. He was drawn from the monitor as he looked over at Gennedy who was nodding to him that they had the samples from the Wisp and were ready to collect it from the Grimalkin. “Colonel, team 1 is on the move to lure out the feline BOWs but I need to voice something.” He said as Nicholai raised a brow as Gennedy pointed to a nearby monitor as the old Russian saw the camera footage flickering. “At the state of our stay, I have been keeping track of the monitors as well as radio contact. I have noticed that the cameras have been half working for us and often times I have lost radio contact with the teams.”
“Doesn’t surprise me.” Nicholai said before looking at his second-in-command. “I have seen similar things in other Umbrella labs; time does not do well with it.” He told as he looked at the monitors again as he crossed his arms. “We need not worry about them as long as the radios work, Shane will be setting off my traps which will alert us where his current position is.” He told as Gennedy nodded and saluted before heading for the door. “Gennedy.” Nicholai said as the man turn looking back at him. “Be swift in collecting the next subject, I’ll need your assistance once we capture the boy again.”
“Yes, Colonel.” He said saluting once more as he left the monitor room and motioned for a few to follow him as they headed down the hallway to the elevator, once inside they proceeded down to the first floor, the wall opened up revealing the hidden elevator in the main lobby hallway as they five stepped out. “Move.” He said drawing his pistol and proceeded forward briskly, besides searching for the elusive Grimalkin, Gennedy thought it would be good to push the boy into moving quickly, the push the prey into more traps but as soon as that thought came to him, the man pushed it aside as they entered the garden outside and stopped seeing a Grimalkin pawing the ground before it perked looking at them.
The Grimalkin are essentially hunter class BOWs and around the size of a tiger, Gennedy knew the risks of fighting one alone. The virus within the feline caused its fur to fall off and their skin is a mottled rotten gray, its yellow and red eyes locked onto the group as it soon bared more of its teeth while growling lowly at them. Those wicked fangs reminded many of the men of extinct Saber Tooth tigers. From the observations and little reports, the Grimalkin were all excellent night hunters and they will actually prey on the Wisps if they are within proximity of them. Gennedy watched the ‘gray cat’ carefully once again as he moved forward as one of his men tried to stop him, the middle age Russian wasn’t going to let the target BOW get away as it snarled at him, he knew this was foolish but the last time they found one; it had ran away.
Figuring how territorial these cats were, he would challenge it into trying to attack him, it was a huge risk. Taking a breath he gave a growl back as the Grimalkin hissed instantly and moved forward, he motioned to the men behind him to get into position as the snow fell around them and the cat, the night sky didn’t help them and they were relying mostly on the dim outside lights, for all they knew there was possibly a pack in the garden with them.
Gennedy watched the cat carefully as he backed away from it slowly. He knew his experience with BOWs was going to help him with killing of this one. Unlike most BOWs these mutated cats were fickle and miscalculating an attack on it would be a fatal mistake. “Come on старая карга.” He whispered harshly which coincided with the Grimalkin charging at him. Gennedy dodged its snapping powerful jaws, its jagged teeth nearly snagging his military attire as he spun around and punched it on the side of its rancid head sending it off balance. The big cat skidded to the left as Gennedy jumped to the right as his men opened fire upon the feline.
R.E.S.S. 2 - Ch7 - Pt3
The Grimalkin snarled and screeched loudly as the bullets shot through its body. It attempted to turn and strike at the source of the bullets but only managed to make it halfway around, letting out high pitch guttural roar moments before collapsing into the snow. A pool of sickly dark blood begins to stain the snow around its limp body as Gennedy signaled his men to stop firing.
Gennedy studied the limp form for a moment as some of his men reloaded their guns while others kept theirs aimed at the BOW. The blood stain spread out in scarlet blossom around the still form of the giant cat. Satisfied that it was dead, Gennedy nodded toward two men that it and took a slow, deep breath as the two of the men started collecting blood samples as well as tissue samples. Once completed the samples were stored in a small specimen pouch before they left with Gennedy back into the hospital.
As the men made their way into the hospital through a long glass hallway Gennedy gave the halt and look signals with his hand which stopped the entire group. Gennedy pointed to the laser trigger for a flash bang in the next hallway. Before he could signal for one of his men to disarm the flash bang Gennedy heard the sound of boots approaching from the far end of the hallway.
Shane walked into the glass hallway Gennedy and his men were in. Shane reacted instantly aiming his pistol at the group. Gennedy smiled and touched the pistol on his hip while his men aimed their rifles at the young Wesker. Gennedy gave the hand signal to hold fire before he said in his thick Russian accent, “Well, it seems we just ran into each other but we do not need to fight.” Shane didn’t reply and kept his gun trained on Gennedy who continued to speak, “As you can see we are in a how you say, a… “Tight” situation and you fighting us would only jeopardize all of our chances of survival. As you may have noticed you are also outnumbered and out gunned.”
Shane frowned, “Tight situation or not it’s all the same to me Ruskie. Where’s your comrade Nicholai?” Shane’s aim didn’t waver as he kept Gennedy in his sights. No matter how desperate the situation was Shane doubted Gennedy would betray his commander’s location but he needed to stall for time considered he was outgunned and only had limited ammo. Even with his powers he couldn’t survive a hailstorm of bullets in a narrow hallway.
Gennedy smiled in a relaxed, friendly manner and shook his head as if amused by something silly a child would say and said, “You simply don’t understand how delicate this place is, do you?” The Russian nodded at the glass lining the hallway. Shane looked away for a second and saw the dull glowing eyes moving around in the darkness. It seemed that the Grimalkin were on the hunt and Shane, being in the better lit part of the hallway was in their clear line of vision unlike Gennedy and his group at the shadowed end.
When Shane looked back at Gennedy and then in the direction one of the pairs of eyes that were rapidly bobbing and getting closer. The heavy cat lunged sending its bulk smashing through the glass of the hallway. Shane jumped backwards out of their way while opening fire on the cat as it skidded across the dirty tile floor bashing into the other glass wall making a spider web of cracks blossom out from the impact point. The Grimalkin shook its head and snarled viciously at Shane as he cursed having not been prepared for fighting something like this. Sure he had the ammo and medical supplies but he just wasn’t ready to fight these cats. Looking where Gennedy and the others were, Shane saw the men had retreated leaving an empty hallway behind. Shane felt like his anger rise when he realized his distracting the Grimalkin helped Gennedy escape.
Shane cursed under his breath as he ran at the Grimalkin. One of the felines swiped its huge clawed paw at him as he blocked it instinctively before kicking it hard in its side knocking it back and shattering more of the glass wall. The cold air rushed in through the more causing Shane to become chilled greatly by it having no coat on himself.
Looking at the end of the hall where Gennedy once stood Shane ran toward it before the wounded cat got up and the others becoming the wiser and following him. What he failed to notice was the trap as the flash bang soon went off as he triggered it. The loud explosion and blinding light caused him to shout before he fumbled to the floor covering his ears and had his eyes closed tightly as they began to tear up. The Grimalkin snarled at that and moved onto the down man but soon scattered when a flare landed before them and snarled at the strange object as they heard shouting as Alex soon came into view waving a pipe and shouted more at them to back away. It didn’t make them leave but the flare kept them at bay as he got Shane up and moved with him to the metal doors leading into the activities room. He closed the doors just before the cats could get at them and stuffed the pipe into the handles so nothing could come in.
It was by this time Shane was slowly recovering from the effects of the flash bang, but the ringing and after image was delaying him from doing too much. “I heard the explosion sir, are you alright?” Alex asked hurrying over to Shane seeing him having found a place to sit on an old wooden chair as he checked Shane over before taking off the pack he had on him. Opening it he pulled out a black coat as he wrapped it around Shane’s shoulders to keep him warm while checking Shane’s eyes over carefully, he wasn‘t surprised by what he saw. “You’ll be alright; it must have been a flash bang.” He reported to him as Shane looked at him painfully before rubbing his eyes.
“I thought you were killed,” Shane admitted. “I didn’t hear you or anything.” That made Alex laugh and he moved back to observe the room they had entered while he left the young man get the coat on himself.
“Nah, Alex Key is not easily killed. When those rats were chasing me, I found a tree that had fallen against the stone wall and climbed it, I heard gun shots and knew that you might need help but there’s Russians here.” Alex said walking over to an old wheelchair before looking at an old typewriter and noticed an old large chest nearby. “This has to be the activities room, the nurse would sit here to watch the patients while typing on the typewriter or putting things into the chest.” He said allowing Shane to recover from the flash bag while opening the chest to see what was inside. he chuckled before closing it having seen ammo and a first aid spray in it. “I can’t understand why these Russians are here, in fact I never met one till now and I must say they do not seem to like having either of us here. But why are they here?” He asked curiously as his gaze rested on Shane sighing before pinching the bridge of his nose, showing he was annoyed as hell. “Where’s the backpack?”
The young Wesker had to pause for a moment to think, the last thing he remember seeing the backpack was against the building before Nicholai and that tyrant, Afanasii, attacked him. But it wouldn’t be there now considering how he was taken inside, but a thought did cross his mind however. Why didn’t Nicholai kill him, let alone not restrain him properly? “I don’t know.” Came his response about the backpack but he knew the possible reason for them being here. To collect samples. “Let’s rest up for a moment before daring going back out there again.” He said rubbing his face before getting up as Alex leaned against the wall checking his pockets as Shan checked the room over to see if there was anything to use but he took advantage of the item box and looked at the typewriter as he smiled, just like the ones he saw in Raccoon City so many years ago.
Amazing read, as always. What does старая карга mean? Was there a translation and I didn't see it?
Thank you, it's Russian for 'Grimalkin', the gray cat.
R.E.S.S. 2- Chapter 8
The rest in the wing wasn’t long for Shane as he was moving around to get his bearings while examining the map he had collected, he pointed to where they were currently before his strong gaze went out the windows at the dark night sky and falling snow. That’s when his eyes saw the helicopter in the distance. The landing lights on the pad still shone brightly in the haze of the snowfall revealing a helicopter of some sort.
That was Nicholai’s escape and Shane knew he needed to get there once he got his gear back, hell, he needed his phone to collect the data but the samples would be an issue. He had no way to guarantee their safe transport considering the trouble he had been having as of late. Going over his agenda in his mind, Shane knew he needed to find his gear, get the data and blow the place, which he hoped would kill Nicholai but if not he had to escape. It seemed like that old Russian had a way to escape or even cheat death, it annoyed the hell of out Shane but he kept it to himself as he looked over at Alex as he said, “Are you going to be alright by yourself again?” As the Canadian looked at him and gave a "thumbs up" gesture. “I still have things to do.” Shane added as Alex nodded.
“I won’t be leaving this room for a while; I’m trying to get my bearings.” The guide told as he looked back outside the windows. “I don’t want to die in this place, that’s for sure. Once I find a way back out without being mauled, I’m gone.”
“I don’t blame you.” Shane said walking to the other double doors in the room before opening them as he entered a medium sized hallway that was connected to a large room at the end, next to him was a flight of stairs leading up to the second floor. With the doors closed behind him, the young Wesker sighed before looking back at them wondering if they both would be able to escape.
Putting his thoughts aside he checked the pistol he had again before deciding to take the stairs, reaching the second floor he found a few of the hallways and rooms blocked so he went up the stairs once again to the third floor and then the fourth followed by the fifth where he heard voices from a hallway leading to another building. Pressing himself against the wall, Shane peeked into the dark red and brown window lined long corridor with boxes place here and there as there was a black door at the end, it was hard to determine if there was more than just that door there as he saw about six men moving a few of the said boxes and Nicholai was there giving out orders from the look of it. It was impossible to Shane to know what they were talking about since they were speaking Russian.
This was his chance, moving from his position he aimed the gun at Nicholai and moved forward to enter the hall as he felt something pressing against his leg followed by a flash and a loud bang, it drew all of their attention to Shane who staggered to his left as Nicholai smirked and the men aimed their pistols and rifles, when Shane recovered the old Russian laughed and said, “So we meet again.” Nicholai aimed and shot his pistol in a flash of movement. Shane dodged the bullet as the old Russian fell back around the left side of the corridor revealing that there was a hallway behind him.
Shane growled from the wound he felt leaking blood and moved forward opening fire at the men in front him before dodging and ducking behind cover. He cursed to himself as he reloaded before standing up again opening fire nailing one as the man fell backwards. Dodging and avoiding the bullets, Shane reached one soldier and kicked him hard against the wall as the man’s ribcage collapsed from the force of the blow. The young Wesker darted forward grabbing two soldiers by the neck and smacked their heads together with a sickening crack. They slumped to the floor leaving two soldiers left.
A small metal ping was heard and then a canister skidded near his feet. Shane once again jumped backwards and ducked behind an old pile of boxes where she shut his eyes and covered his ears with his hands as the flash bang grenade exploded. The last two soldiers moved in ready to take their shot only to find no one behind the boxes. Shane popped up behind them and snapped the one soldier’s neck before he even had a chance to react and smashed his dying body into the other soldier smashing him face first into the wall.
As the bodies slumped to the floor Shane caught his breath and moved toward where Nicholai was hiding and aimed his gun only for a powerful, inhumanly large gloved hand to shoot out of the darkness and grab him around the neck. Trying to aim at his attacker Afanasii grabbed his pistol with her free hand and whipped it off a wall smashing it to pieces. Shane struggled as she effortlessly picked him up off the ground and held him there. Nicholai came out of the shadows behind her chuckling as he watched Shane wiggling to free himself.
Nicholai shook his head as he said, “Did you really think I would come inside this… hellhole of a place unprepared for you? You’re just as foolish as Albert was. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree, eh boy? ” Shane could only look at Nicholai with hatred and rage as he gasped for air in the grip of the female tyrant.
Nicholai spoke to Afanasii, “Get rid of him.” Afanasii threw Shane backwards as his body broke through a glass window as he impacted and skidded across the roof of the hospital. Snow scattered as he coughed and groaned seeing the Tyrant moving to the window as the wind blew harshly making her dark black hair sway gently. Her pale skin matched the white of the snow making her appear to be some kind of vengeful ghost haunting the old hospital. The tyrant stepped through the broken window pane not noticing the broken glass that scraped and snapped off against her head and leather jacketed arms.
Shane coughed rubbing his sore neck while getting up as he could hear the wood groaning under his feet as he looked at the window once again seeing the Tyrant leaping down towards him causing him to leap aside as she landed where he had been lying. The roofing groaned under their weight as he looked around for a way back inside and off the roofs so he didn’t have to fight her in such a dangerous place. He needed to think fast on how to fight her without falling off, let alone inside. Taking up his guard as she stood up Shane focused on her and rushed at her hitting her hard on the chest causing her to stagger back a bit as she grunted and shook it off while Shane moved back holding up his fists, two tyrant class beings fighting each other and Nicholai watched from the window enjoying the show as he seen Shane taking a few hard blows to the face, splitting open his right cheek and once again causing blood to fall from his nose when she hit him there as well. The boy already had a bruised left cheek and his left eye was red from it, if he did survive the beating, Nicholai would enjoy putting him under control.
The roof groaned and threatened to collapse as Shane took notice as each step Afanasii made toward him as he smirked, he could get rid of her just by making her collapse the roof. Fixing his gaze on her he jerked back avoiding a punch and ducked to avoid a grab as he kicked her hard on her legs as it pushed him back as he rolled and got up before hopping over to another more stable stone roof with a old weathered storage shed for maintenance that stood the test of time being on the roof. The lock was rusted as Shane jerked it off and went inside fast to find an alternative weapon to use since his pistol was gone and had overly limited ammo to begin with, which was 44 rounds total. The contents of the shed weren’t much of pleasure as he searched quickly grabbing the first two items that stood out, metal pipes, just as Afanasii bashed the shed apart causing Shane to get out fast while moving from the shed as she tore it open like a piece of fruit as he glared at her. The shed was still in her way as he readied the pipes before watching her as she said his name which sent an annoying chill inside his body as she tore more of the shed off before throwing it hard at him but he was able to easily avoid it before looking at where she was but found her gone. “Oh shit...” He whispered standing his ground while searching around before hearing the wind against material as he looked up seeing her as she came down hard nearly bashing him into the room but the force was enough to knock Shane down as she stood back up while Shane recovered.
That’s when a gunshot sounded out and pain shot through Shane’s leg as he saw the gunshot wound as he fixed his gaze to the window seeing Nicholai and his sniper rifle, the old Russian was hell bent on bringing Shane down but he wasn’t going to go down without a fight. Striking Afanasii when she got close did little to no effect on the female tyrant as Shane was losing room on the roof as he jumped over to a neighboring roof once again as it moaned and groaned before moving to another to keep himself away from the tyrant but the roof he was on was threatening to give way as he smirked seeing the Tyrant jumping again into the air. “Idiot.” Shane said as he moved to avoid her as he moved along she hit the roof hard as it could not handle her weight as it broke under the force which caused the entire roof to collapse upon itself taking Afanasii and Shane with it as Nicholai watched as the two vanished as he muttered, “Damn.”
R.E.S.S. 2 - Chapter 8 Part 2
The two fell sixty feet down into the therapy pool that was filled with fetid disgusting water that had been sitting there for many years, to some it would have looked like foul swamp water.
The impact with the water caused an intense rush go through Shane’s body as he coughed trying to surface but Afanasii’s massive impact with the bottom of the pool from her jump caused a hole to happen as she fell right through while Shane tried to get to any side of the pool as it started to drain down the hole but he wasn’t able to reach it as he looked back to see what was going on only to widen his eyes more as he struggled to get away but it sucked him down into the hallway it was draining down into as he coughed and grunted as the current was flushing him and anything else in the way toward the end of the hallway which was an open elevator shaft as Wisps and zombies were caught up by the tidal wave while Shane tried to grab hold of anything to stop himself. He watched as a zombie vanished in the elevator shaft while a few small Wisps were killed from the impact with the back of it, Shane grew desperate as he clawed the floor but it was pointless as the water flushed him into the shaft. When he saw the elevator cable and grabbed hold of it tightly as water rushed over him leaving him hanging there till it was all gone. Body shaking he coughed a few times looking at the massive drop, panting he looked at the open doors as he tried reaching but he was too far away, moving back and forth he started to move the heavy duty cable to swing and just when he was able to grab the ledge the cable was tugged onto hard by Afanasii at the bottom of the shaft who was banged up and bleeding purple ichor as she soon grabbed it with both hands and she yanked down on it hard causing Shane to look up as the cable groaned and snapped instantly.
Dropping a good few feet did Shane reach out taking hold of the emergency ladder as he nearly slipped off having wet hands as he grabbed hold with his numbing legs while his teeth chattered from being so cold, his movements were slow from the cold as the cable fell to the bottom causing the foul Afanasii to growl a bit seeing her target still high up in the shaft making her move inside and leapt up grabbing onto the ladder as it shook from the sudden weight making Shane look down at the Tyrant climbing up after him as he moved a little bit faster finding a closed elevator door. Climbing onto the ledge he pressed his hands against them as they started to pry open just enough for him to slip inside and run, rubbing his arms he continued running seeing crates, boxes, cages and many other large bulky items about him and he figured he must be in the storage part of the hospital as he ducked through a door going down a few steps leading to the maintenance halls which lead to the generator room but he stop at the incendiary room seeing a familiar bag next to a dead scientist who was killed by a Wisp judging by the many bite wounds. The roaring fire made Shane smile as he closed the door and move to it to get warm as he got out of the wet and smelly clothes as he got his bag and opened it finding only very little of his original supplies, mostly his scarf and coat he wore on the way in, the coat was still coated with his blood and the hole made him huff seeing it as the fire shined through. A heart shot and it was dead on too, Nicholai wasn’t a messy shooter after all and that made Shane cautious now.
Staying close to the fire he left himself get warm and partly dry as he had taken off his boots and socks to prevent himself for getting sore feet, it didn’t take long for either to dry from this roaring fire as he smiled putting them back on. Healing steadily, unlike his father who healed instantly, Shane got his coat back on and scarf, grabbing the gloves he fixed his hair before listening carefully as he swore he heard something like metal being scrapped. Moving around the room once again he found an old typewriter and an item box, much like he had seen before, running his fingers over the old metal keys he checked the item box for anything useful and found a red herb and a key. Upon examining the key he saw it was marked 'Freight Elevator' which made Shane look at his map to where he was at previously, he hadn’t seen the elevator on his move but he marked it as his next location to go to. “Might be a way out of here or it could take me to where more of the samples are.” He thought to himself wondering now if it’ll also take him to the control room but he shook his head as he remembered the key code he got: 9830. Was that for a locked room?
Shane tensed instantly hearing that scrapping sound again as he looked in the direction, at the door he came through, growling a bit at himself for showing fear he moved over to where he saw a few pipes on the wall. Carefully feeling them for warmth which showed none, did he pull them free to use as weapons as he steeled himself and exited the room.
The area was thankfully clear as Shane snuck down the hallway before hearing a faint, muffled sound. Inching down the hall quickly Shane found himself at the door with the words Boiler Room etched on its rusty placard.
R.E.S.S. 2- Chapter 8 Part 3
Now that he was next to the door he heard the muffled sound of movement more clearly now, something or someone was inside. Cautiously he slowly turned the knob and inched the old heavy door slowly open as his heart beat quicker tensing for what might be waiting for him.

As he slowly slipped into the dimly lit room he quietly shut the door behind him in case something decided to sneak up behind him. Shane didn’t see anything out of the ordinary once he got inside the boiler room.
Rusty pipes and valves attached to the old boilers, water heaters and steam heating system sat there rotting. The sound of sporadically dripping water could be heard coming from another side of the room. Old wooden skids with corroded barrels of grease and machine parts were shoved into a corner near a work bench filled with scattered tools and old rags. Along the wall next to the bench were cracked and fogged over gauges connected to a control panel thick with dust and grime.
Across from the boilers metal stairs lead up to catwalks giving access to the myriad pipes and valves that lined the ceiling that once fed the hospital heat and hot water. The floor was thick metal plating with long stretches of grates set between them.
Shane didn’t see a thing in the dank gloomy room as he scanned around it carefully, never noticing the cameras that blended into the ceiling and walls in different spots observing him and every movement he made from several different angles. He was unaware that he was being watching by Nicholai and Afanasii who were safe in the security control room far from him.
The boiler room was musty, damp and cold and Shane was already starting to feel a chill run up his spine. At first he thought it was simply the temperature of the place but suddenly he realized his senses telling him there was something dangerous in the room with him.
Shane froze when he heard that sound again only this time without the thick walls and doors muffling it, the sound was a wet crackling crunch, like a giant stalk of fresh celery being snapped in half. Shane’s eyes widened when he saw the decapitated head of a wisp tumble down the metal stairs. It landed with a heavy metallic thud on the grated floor. Its thick neck bone had been snapped in half and ragged bloody claw marks gouged its head. Scanning up in the darkness above the steps where it came from Shane suddenly realized it wasn’t rusty water that had been dripping down from the pipes ahead, it was blood.
He could hear munching noises then suddenly he saw two yellowish eyes glinting up and down behind what looked like a giant burlap sack. Shane blinked his eyes into focus and was horrified to see it was actually a giant Grimalkin far bigger than of the others he had seen thus far tucking into the carcass of the decapitated wisp, its thick claws actually came through the dead animal’s body making scraping noises on the metal floor, which made the giant feline’s ratty ears flicker.
The monster had been so engrossed in its fresh kill that it hadn’t noticed Shane at the far side of the room below it. Taking steps backward softly, Shane knew it would be foolish to stick around let alone deal with this thing considering what he encountered earlier, but this one… it was a giant compared to the others. If the Grimalkin were put into classes this one would be right at the top in the King category.
Shane still hadn’t noticed the cameras in the room nor had he noticed the electronic dead bolt on the inside of the door he had used to gain access to the boiler room. Nicholai stood smugly in the security operations room and a smile crept upon his scarred face. As Shane reached his hand behind him to grab the door a loud metallic screech of metal was heard followed by a loud clanking thump as the deadbolt locked the door shut.
The King Grimalkin’s attention was roused as Shane turned quickly trying to wrench the thick door open but the old rusty handle wrenched off in his hand. Suddenly the power and machinery in the room grinded to life as valves issued steam rattling all the pipes as it clanked and banged pressure through the protesting metal.
As it jumped down the sharp thick claws of its paws grinded against the floor leaving deep grooves in the metal as the vicious feline snarled at its new prey. Shane grabbed two lengths of unattached pipes from a rack next to the door and stood his ground, keeping his hands so tight around them they actually crumpled inwards making a solid grip fro him to grasp as he watched the feline sway its tattered tail and growl.
The large sharp yellowish teeth glistened with fresh blood and saliva in the light of the room as the gold and crimson eyes locked onto Shane. Its eyes mirrored his and his father’s eyes more closely than anything he had seen up till now. Shane scowled a bit wondering if this thing was made from a strain of the same virus that made him and his father what they were. He quickly snapped the thought aside and watched as the predator’s eyes met his and slowly started to circle around him as he started to circle around it neither ever taking their eyes off the other.
The King Grimalkin edged closer and took a swipe at Shane with its powerful arm but he dodged and swung one of the pipes hitting it on the shoulder with a thud as it growled swiping at him again trying to wound him but missed as Shane again crashed a pipe into its side. Several times the big cat attempted this and each time met with the business end of a rusty pipe.
Shane kept moving and dodging its attacks until he hit his back against the wall. He ducked as the cat’s giant clawed paw missed his face by inches, the sharp deadly points scrapped against the wall as he zipped to his left out of harm’s way. The Grimalkin snarled viciously at its prey not used to being denied its kill for this long.
Shane circled around the King Grimalkin and seeing how deep the claw marks were on the wall it gave Shane an idea. He hurried toward the exit but was cut off mid-step as the giant cat jumped in front of him blocking his escape. Skidding on the floor Shane fell on his back and slid under the Grimalkin whacking both of its front legs with the pipes. The enraged animal roared in pain unable to move its forelegs properly to pin Shane down.
The Grimalkin tried biting Shane’s head off with its mouth open wide but Shane crossed both pipes together in front of him and jammed both of them upward into its maw snapping off one of its giant tusk like fangs. The Grimalkin tried but couldn’t gnaw its way through the pipes as it growled, snarled and dripped bloody drool from its maw onto the pipes and Shane.
Jerking its head violently from side the side, the Grimalkin King made Shane almost lose his grip on the pipes as he was thrashed around. Knowing he couldn’t hold on for long Shane kicked the giant in the stomach repeatedly. It bucked and Shane slid out from under it and in desperation he head butted the feline hard enough to make himself and the animal see stars momentarily. Shane cursed at himself, “Idiot! That’s not what dad meant when he said use your head in a fight!”
The Grimalkin snarled making a guttural sound like a jaguar in pain and closed its blazing eyes, shaking its head violently making Shane loose his grip on the pipes.
Shane pushed himself further under the feline and managed to get his legs behind the hind legs of the beast allowing himself to move a bit before forcing his knees and then feet up into the stomach and groin of the animal repeatedly making the Grimalkin snarl loudly as it flipped it’s head back in agony causing it to catapult the pipes from its mouth as the wind was knocked out of it.
The King Grimalkin weakly attempted to claw at Shane with its hind legs but the pain proved too much allowing Shane to rabbit punch the rib cage of the feline several times before pushing up hard with both hands, which threw the massive beast off of him slamming it against a wall of pipes that ruptured and burst scalding its back with steam causing it to roar like a lion in pain.
Shane rolled onto his feet, his hands stinging from the rabbit punches. He had to get to the door to get out. The pipes were out of his reach and without some sort of weapons to use against this beast he knew fighting it unarmed, even in its injured state, would be difficult.
The Grimalkin recovered from its steam bath quickly though it was showing signs of its injuries in its shaky stance and labored breathing. Shane smirked as the big cat lunged at him, its reflexes dulled from its beating so far and he easily dodged its leap which ended with it smashing the exit door with its thick, blunt skull.
Shane smiled when he saw the deep dent in the metal door. He knew if he could trick this thing into doing that once or twice more it would blow that door into the hallway and hopefully kill itself in the process. Shane didn’t have the time to pat himself on the back for is plan since he was once again fighting for his life. He was no immortal that was for sure.
Moving away from the stunned animal Shane grabbed the pipes from where they had fallen and turned just in time to see the massive feline bounding at him and once again he moved out of the way just as it lunged sending it into slamming into the side of a large boiler. It screeched as the hot steel of the boiler scalded the skin off its scalp.
Shane couldn’t help but think of how much this thing reminded him so much of the zombified lionesses he had to deal with when he was a boy trapped in Raccoon City. That thought made him flush with anger and adrenaline when he thought about what he had been through. But just as quickly his anger was replaced with excitement since he finally had the power to fight back. What he wouldn’t have given to have these powers in Raccoon City…
Moving like lightning Shane struck the Grimalkin on the back and hind quarters making it forget the searing pain on its head and snarl at him in and swipe in reaction to the sudden attack but Shane dodged and repeatedly did the same attack bopping it on the ass and back and then dodging its attacks.
Shane did this until he led the animal into position once again. Standing there in front of the dented door Shane taunted it by smacking the pipes together and yelling at it to attack him.
The Grimalkin King took the bait and took two steps before leaping at Shane but as he moved the cat twisted in mid leap and fell short of hitting the door. Surprised by his miscalculation Shane leapt away but the King mustered the energy to leap and snagged his billowing coat in its jaws making him shout, “Aw fuck!” before it whipped its head from side to side violently, ripping the jacket in its fangs as it threw Shane like a frightened mouse against the dented door repeatedly before the material on his jacket ripped off in the beast’s mouth. Shane still held onto the pipes and clanked both against the Grimalkin’s skull bending and denting them from the force which made the big cat scamper away from him.
Shane glanced quickly at the door noticing his battering against it caused even more damage to it. Shane laughed which turned into coughing as he spit hot coppery blood from his mouth. The Grimalkin stood by mewling already tensing to charge now that it had the smell of his blood fueling its hunger. Drool began to drip from its fangs as it once again started to stalk towards Shane.
Shane smiled and gritted his teeth, “Playing with me huh? Well come on fucker dinners ready!” Shane took a fighter stance with both pipes at the gripped in his hands. The Grimalkin King roared in answer and started running full tilt at Shane who stood his ground waving the dented rusty pipes in front of him.
The Grimalkin King lunged at Shane but instead of dodging left or right he crouched and jumped straight up over its head and as its body passed below him he stabbed both pipes through its neck bones, splintering them as its momentum carried it into the steel door breaking its neck and the door in one violent move.
Shane landed on the metal floor with a heavy thud and crouched slightly using the pipes to prop himself up. He felt weak from exhaustion and the pain he felt inside him wasn’t helping. They weren’t broken but his ribs were definitely bruised and he ached in spots he never knew could feel this sort of pain.
Turning towards the Grimalkin King Shane was relieved to see his plan had worked. The King lay dead crumpled atop the broken steel door with its head crooked at a violent upturned angle with its jaw wide open, frozen in a silent roar.
Shane sighed and stepped over the carcass back into the hall, looking and listening for any movement he waited for a minute before continuing his trek through the bowels of the hospital.
In the Security room Nicholai frowned as he saw Shane emerge into the hallway on one of the monitors. Then he noticed the slight limp in his walk and the pained expression on Shane’s face as he walked slowly down an access hallway.
Smiling a broad grin Nicholai walked over to the door and opening it pointing towards Afanasii, “Find Shane and kill him!”
Without a glance at her master or a hint of emotion Afanasii turned and walked out of the monitor room door in even purposeful strides as Nicholai shut it behind her. Taking his stance back at the monitors Nicholai stared at Shane as he limped along the hall and smashed a zombie’s skull in with one of the pipes he was holding. Shane looked pained by the effort but still he trudged on.
Nicholai smirked and thought, “The boy is a stubborn defiant ass like his father. And like him he’ll meet a painful violent end… that much I can promise.”
